Plasti dip rims.
Hey guys
So my semester here in Albany is coming to an end, and I'll be heading back home to Canada. I'll have a lot of time on my hands and I was thinking of some projects to work on.
Besides the new blue fogs I'm installing,
I was thinking of Plasti dipping the OEM rims in black.
I just wanted to know your oppinions on it.
I did some quick photoshops to see how it would look, (nothing good enough to post)
but I thought it would look really nice with my red calipres.
anyway, is this the right stuff to use:

let me know!

I think if you're going to do rims for your ride, you should do it the right way; shell out the cash for a set of rims that look good.
Plasti-dipping would just make your rims look cheap in my opinion.
My 2 cents...

My thoughts exactly.
It's not like I'm cheap. I want my winter rims to look good. I'm picking up a set of 19' axis elites with summers for my summer wheels. So I do shell out the cash.
I've seen a lot of dip'd rims and I think they look great for what they are.

not too bad, but the moment they get a little chip in it, youll be able to see the aluminum underneath and then it might look cheap.
19" axis elites! the same rims ive been eying for a few months

I saw a sale on them on ebay a few weeks ago. A set of four 19's (just wheels) for 700. I suggest you jump on that.
I'm buying the set with wheels and tpms for around 2200-2300.

You should play with this stuff and try it out. It's pretty damn hard to chip it. You could spray it on something and then take a hammer to it, the item you spray would get damaged before it chips if cleaned correctly. My front grill is holding up fine to daily freeway abuse and rock chips.

Thanks for the compliment!
And of course, I will be getting new summer rims, but this is just for the winter!
That and the salt content on the road is high, and I wouldnt want to damage my wheels. Besides, I think it looks great!

Thanks!
Im still working on them
I have to do one wheel at a time because I had a secondary jack malfunction that almost crushed me. I was using my Lexus jack and it became weak and caved in on its side while i was taking a look under the car.
I should be done later to night, and Ill take full body pics.

Fixed because looking under a car that is jacked with a tire changing jack is like applying for a Darwin Award.
OP, I'm curious is this is going to mess with the wheel balancing or make it difficult to balance the wheels. Looks good though, much better than I had assumed it would.

Sorry for the dirty car, I had a long road trip before I did the wheels. I'm going to wait a few days before I wash the car just to make sure everything stays nice and strong.

looks good. IMO, to carry out the murdered out look, you gotta black out the window trim and door handles, get some black lug nuts, and paint the center caps

Do you think the car is fine the way it is or does it look funny?

Just an update:
The plasti dip is holding out great in the cold albany weather and snow/ conditions.
I've put 2000kms on these since I did them and I cannot complain, still look great.

im very interested in this!! Im a student.. cheap mods win me over haha! I currently have my front grill matted out too, but it was wrapped in vinyl and its not holding up very well, seems this plasti dip works better.
Some questions:
Did u use the plasti dip from home depot?
Im a noob when it comes to this stuff, so could u describe the process of how u did this?

Yes I used the Plasti dip from home depot.
I did the following:
1) Removed the wheel from the car.
2) Removed the lugs and the emblem
3) cleaned the surface off with wheel cleaner and wiped it dry
4) Took playing cards and surrounded the rim (right between the tire and the rim) - This stops over spray and is 100 times easier then taping. Tape the air valve.
5) Did one coat.
6) Waited an hour.
7) Coat 2, waited another hour.
8) Coat 3.
9) waited over night to dry and then placed on the car.

I acutally plasti-dipped my chrome trim and door handles but didn't came out as well since i didn't let it dry that much so when i pulled the newspaper and tape, it ripped some parts of the plasti-dipped. going to redo it along with rims on one side to see how i like it.
Definitely should do this in the AM unlike me who did it at night.

Rich and Famous
I have the 2011 MDX - Advance and it comes from factory with Gray painted wider 19 inch wheels. Lugs and Logos are bright chrome. They look awesome .
Note they are not Home Depo plastic coat in spray can.
I think its a powder coat plastic type spray Acura uses
and the dealer said they can get them re coated if you
are in accident or hit curb.
Spray cans will get you there but a professional
dry powder coat will be way better and of course more $$$.
If you DIY spray watch out for Baseball stats like
Hits, Runs, Errors and use degreaser solvents to clean well
before applying a good primer.

dude, kowloon that is hot, how are the door handles holding up? How long ago did you do this? I'm wondering if it's showing wear since you are constantly touching it when you open the door.

It's been on for about a week and has been through a car wash. It's been holding up very well. But I did a half-ass job on it since it was more to see if i would like it, so if you were to look at it, it would seem like its peeling off.
