Man... I just paid for a power steering flush ($279) and had the air in my tires changed to a fall/winter blend (more nitrogen I think) at $200.

Funny story on this topic.

Last month I paid to get my oil changed by a shop (mistake) but none the less. Guy at oil shop said, "whelp, you see, we checked your all your fluids including transmission, oil, wiper, power steering, and your coolant, all looked good"

To that i responded, "thanks but how full was the power stearing, can you show me how to check this, its been really hard to turn lately", he stared back at me for a while. I asked for my keys. Will NOT return there.

Lets just say, this place of business does not get to service "Big Nasty", as I call her, any more.

Change the watts every 10k miles and do a voltage flush every two years.

In case anyone reading this thread is serious about maintaining their electric power steering:

Yes, you do need to do maintenance. Acura recommends replacing the AA batteries every 2 years. The batteries are located behind the horn button on the steering wheel. Do it before they get too weak and you start to lose steering assist. I'm putting Energizers in when I service mine.

I was about to do a DIY on the power steering flush too...

Having said that

Noob question but instead of batteries why couldn't this just run off the cars main battery?

You do know he's trying to be sarcastic, no car manufacturer will put AAA batteries for a safety drivetrain component.

Absolutely. All reputable manufacturers would use double A batteries.

Ya'll got it wrong. Those AA batteries are the rechargeable kind. They recharge when you turn the steering wheel. So maintenance is pretty easy, don't drive in a straight line for too long!

No lie...glad that Mr.NC asked those questions first...saved me the embarrassment of asking them thinking you guys are serious. Assholes.

Btw, do the DIY on power steering flush Mr.NC...we could all use a good laugh now...and I bet there'll be one or two people who'll take your DIY seriously.

Here's an iffy lube story from a few years back.

For those of you not familiar with Audi, the tranny is sealed - no dipstic. To change the tranny fluid (lifetime according to Audi but should probably be changed prior to 100k miles) you need to let the car sit for a few hours and you need an Audi/VW specific scan tool to reset some stuff - in addition to a special tool to fill in the fluid. None of which Iffy Lube has.

Audi/VW uses a coolant that is made to Audi/VW specs. It is not interchangeable with the green stuff or with the "compatible with everything" coolant.

That's the most absurd thing I have ever heard. Are you an idiot?

Everybody knows that turning left requires left requires more power. Accordingly, the batteries are good for 4 hours of right turns, but only 2 hours of left turns. Sheesh - what is wrong with you guys? Is everyone in this thread a noob?

I think you need to drain and refill the batteries before they would recharge.

You guys! Giving all this info to the OP might confuse him. We gotta relate the information to his predicament.
...so, OP, are you posting because your steering has problems? Any aftermarket accessories? I heard HIDs or LEDs sometimes draw power from the AA batteries that power the electric steering. Are you sure that the last time you brought it in for service they used Energizers? Sometimes those pesky stealership or lube shops will use generic brand batteries which really will affect the performance of your car!!

How can I change the watts or the flush? Is it a repair my mechanic can do, or is it dealer thing ?
