Lower Engine Cover Damage Cause

Slightly different take on the lower engine cover posts.

I recently noticed a metal grinding noise when I would go over a bump or at the bottom of a hill. I just peeked under my car (2012 TSX 4cyl auto) and found the metal part of the splash guard totally mangled.

I'm trying to put together how this can happen, and can use your help eliminating causes:
1) Last oil change was June 2021, at a dealer, so presumably filter was changed. My understanding is that the metal part of the guard has to be removed to replace the filter? They did not disclose any damage.
2) In July, my timing chain and VTC were replaced (at the same dealer). This work sounds unrelated, can you confirm? Again, they did not note any damage.
3) In August, I was in a small accident where someone hit my rear right door. The body work was done in September (just rear door replacement and rear 1/4 panel repair, plus paint, etc.). Nothing in the front or under the hood was touched. The noise started right after I got my car back. But they shouldn't have touched the splash guard I thought.

Any ideas on how this could have happened and/or who should have noticed it in the past 6 months? I don't remember driving over any curbs or anything that caught the edge.

it looks like it was pushed backwards from an impact.
lift the car and look for more evidence of something hitting it

Did you take your car to the Jiffy Lube monkeys to try and do an oil change?

unfortunately I don’t have access to one. Going to the body shop who did my work after the accident this week. Hard for me to say what the initial damage was and which damage was happening driving around hearing the grinding noise.

did you read my post? Last (and actually ALL) oil changes have been at the dealer.

Do you remember if the body shop or dealer had these type of in ground lifts? Usually when I see this is when backing up over these lifts or running over something on the road.

Good question, i'll ask the body shop tomorrow. I don't remember going over a curb or berm.

I think you nailed the cause!

i spoke to the body shop today and obviously they said it’s not possible. I don’t know how to prove it either way. Dealer said he can just get the metal and will install for free so I think I have to suck it up. Ugh.

It is a cheap enough fix. Will be as good as new!
