Low oil

Omg, guys I had the same issue. My 09 tsx with 50k had been showing 'check oil level' in fast corners.
The Acura dealer said they had to replace the oil switch (whatever that is), and told me to come back once the part arrives. But my car stopped doing that ever since the dealer visit, so I never actually got the replacement in. That was about 3 months ago.
Now I wonder if the dealer simply disabled the sensor. Am I being paranoid?

Burning Brakes
My first thought would be that this car is floored early and often. Usually black stains means the car is running rich.

quick update.....after 100 miles on the dealer consumption test. the level was between the two holes on the stick which is "normal" according to acura. However, they did say they are seeing more and more of these cars come in. He stated to bring it back if the light comes back on. I'm guessing if they see a ton of these vehicles coming in with the same problem Acura will have to do something about it. I'm just going to play the game and see if a recall comes out before my powertrain warranty runs out in two more years

That white 2012 SE must have something wrong with the engine. I see the smoked bumper on occasion in my commute but it's usually either 1990's civics/integras slammed to the ground with aftermarket exhausts, Older Diesel Jettas, or some other high mileage poorly maintained vehicle.
Unless the owner of that vehicle takes it to the track every day he's had it or used oil way out of spec I just can't see how you would get your bumper to look like it has a smokestack underneath it. My brother's 1990 Honda Accord with 250k on it doesn't get like that even after months of not washing it.
The K24 in our TSX only has 28k on it but it uses NO measureable amount of oil after 7500 mile intervals on M1 5w-20. Seems like after 10 years of production Honda would have assembly down to a science on this engine.

so I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow. I've only driven about 350 miles and the oil level dropped just on the lower dot. it was previously in between the two after 1000 miles. I hope they just decide to fix it under warranty. I'm getting tired of going up there every other week.

Slightly off original topic but perhaps somewhat relevant. Regarding first oil change, with my previous experience the my 08 TL, it was common knowledge that the Hondas/Acuras came with a specially formulated "break-in" oil and you were not supposed to change it until you got the maintenance reminder (or around 10%). This helped to assure that everything got seated correctly and all the parts were meshed well. Once I had that first oil change, I went to synthetic and never had to add between changes. I am following the same plan with my TSX. 5k miles and 50% left on the oil. Down about a 1/3 of a quart and spends a lot of time above 5000 rpm.

kait had her 09 TSX 6MT's motor torn down and rebuilt/replaced due to an oil consumptions problem, i'll tell her to post on here

Hey all .. Dave asked me to post in here.
I had the same problem as you. Around 80% my oil light on my car would come on, because indeed I had no oil. I took it to three different dealers. Honda of Union NJ and Acura of Bridgewater NJ proceeded to tell me that it was "normal" because it is a manual. That statement alone makes me not trust those shops anymore, because manual vs automatic transmission should have nothing to do with oil consumption.
Anyway, Honda of Clinton right away said that there was a problem (duh) and they started a consumption test. I had to go to them every 1,000 miles for 3,000 miles or so. The first 2,000 miles looked normal to them, regarding oil lost, which pissed me off because I knew something wasn't right. Then, when I came in the third time, they were shocked. It had basically none in it. (I was at 80% oil according to the reader).
They told me that they had to contact Acura Tech for the next steps, which took about a week. Then it came back that the pistons had to be replaced. I assume that is all they replaced, but Iam going to go back to the dealer soon and get a write up from them since they never officially gave me one.
It's probably also worth mentioning that supposedly the pistons were already replaced once due to some sort of recall. And, speaking of recalls, we have recalls on some of our moldings (like the driver side pillar molding). Good thing because I had to tape mine down, and then the recall came out so I got it fixed
It's been about 3 weeks since I have had my car with the "fix" so it is too soon to see if it fixed the problem. We will have to wait until I get to 80% oil again.. lol.
Also, the repair took a week. Which was longer than it should have, because the guy working on my car threw out his back while working on it, and they only wanted him working on it.
I'll update you all if the problem doesn't appear to be fixed.

My dealer is having a hard time (so they say) to get Acura to authorize any work. I've gone through like 4-5 oil consumption tests so hopefully siting you as fellow oil consumers, maybe I can get something done on my car.
Thanks!

I honestly don't remember my service advisors name. But it was Clinton Acura in NJ. If you want, call and say the girl with the white tsx that just had her engine ripped apart. They will know exactly what you're talking about. Lol

Update.... Haven't heard a word from the dealer. The car has been there since Oct. 22nd. The only thing I do know is they took the head off, took some pictures and sent them to Acura. Not really sure what to think at this point. My advisor said they will more than likely order a short block but that was sometime last week. Hopefully I will hear from them by the end of the week.

wouldn't it be better and less time consuming if Acura replaced the long bock instead of rebuilding? the techs probably want to rebuild the bottom end since they probably get paid 15-20hrs instead of the maybe 8-10hrs to replace the long block. All they have to say is the cams are scoured and voila! new motor.

2012 SE with 6spd. I'm at 6300 and my light blinked the other day at a sudden stop. I checked it last around 3xxx miles and it was fine but I was down about a quart and a half when the light blinked. My '06 Civic Si burned some oil when it was new too.
I just topped it off for now and plan to do the first oil change soon...I'll keep and eye on it after that and if it continues I'll bring it in.

I have a 2012 SE 6 speed. For the first 5k miles, I had to top off about 3/4 of quart. I changed the oil at 5K. I am at 6500 miles now and no sign of any oil consumption. For those of you who are still on the original oil, may be you should wait until after the first oil change to see what happen.

Keep us updated 09TSXMT! Hopefully these examples can convince my dealer to do something more.
I am on my second round of Oil Consumption tests after my first oil change.
Unfortunately, it seems like every 4-5k miles the light starts coming on.

I own a 09 tsx 6MT (12.9K km on odometer)and experiencing the same issue. I actually got a recall letter from Acura Canada mentioning about engine oil over consumption, currently I'm adding more than 2 liters of engine oil (roughly 1 liter per 7000km) between each service. I did ask my dealership but was told it's "normal" to consume this much of engine oil. My 15 year old civic only burns out 1 liter after 6000 kms and has over 300k on odometer. I'm checking out here if I'm the only person who is experiencing this. My dealership is highly unlikely to commit the recall unless I'm burning over a liter over 1500kms. Any input will be appreciated.

Comparing oil consumption to older cars may not be fair since the new engines have low tension rings and require 0w20 oil that didn't even really exist when older cars were manufactured. It is what it is, other car makes seem to be having the same issue.

That sounds about right. How low do you think it'd have to be for the light to come on? I'd guess 1/2 to 1 quart. 1 quart in 5K is still reasonable to me for consumption, given the fact the oil is so thin.

UPDATE.. Acura stated the best course of action is to put in new rings on this motor. They are sending a ring kit and a special tool to clean the cylinders. Should have the parts by the end of the week. I asked my advisor "Is this a try this and see if this works approach or is this a sure thing?" He stated they are confident this should work... I guess time will tell..

Hi everyone -- just figured I would give my update here in hopes that it'll help other people with this issue.
Ever since Clinton Acura ripped my car a new one (hehe) it has been fine. The car isn't consuming more oil than it should. At least for now

My car is currently at the dealership. They have taken apart the engine and said they did not notice any scoring. So they decided they are putting in new pistons and rings. Hopefully this will take care of the issue. Seems to working for most so far.
I have been in a TL loaner for a week and I really want keyless/push button start in the baddest way.
Hopefully I will know more in a few days.

I guess I'll chime in as well. I have approx 5000 miles on the car after the new pistons and rings and all seems to be doing well. I am getting a rattle in the morning when I start it. From searching here in the forum it could be the timing chain tensioner. I'll have them look at it when it goes in for the oil change. I hope my oil problems are gone!

update number 2.. Took the car in this morning to get the rattle noise checked out.. Lead SA came back and said "Need to call the regional director. It was over a quart low on oil hense the reason why the valves are rattling in cold startup." So looks like she might be going under the knife again. I'm waiting to hear back from them.

^Sorry to hear about your problem.
My car start burning a quart every 3-4K miles after 3 years of driving at around 60K mile mark. My car has 87K mile (140K km) on the odometer now, just top up every month or so. I am old school, always check my oil level every other fill up.

Thanks... I have a feeling that may be a problem no matter what they do it will always burn oil. After my warranty is up I will be vigilant checking the oil. In the meantime, as long as it's covered under powertrain, let them do whatever they can to diagnose and fix the problem.
