Low battery problem?

I am mentally challenged when it comes to automobiles, this being my first car that I have bought on my own, When you have a low battery does a warning sign turn on in the car, how would I know if battery is low?

I do not believe there's a warning sign for low battery. Now that you mention it, maybe they should...email Acura Corporate!

Batteries tend to die with no advanced warning. They die a slow death, but you won't know it until that one attempt to start where it simply cannot provide the cranking amps required. Many auto experts recommend replacing your car battery every 4 or 5 years, as most don't last beyond that time.

Sure, you can have a battery last 6 or 7 years, but why chance getting stuck somewhere? You can get decent batteries these days for $60-$80. That's a small price to pay to avoid being stranded.

If you still have your OEM factory battery, I would replace it no later than 3 years, because automakers put the cheapest, crappiest batteries in at the factory. Just my $.02.

Ditto with what MardiGras said. I had an Acura OEM battery last me for 9 years without even a hint of a problem until one cold, dark winter night leaving work when my motor wouldn't go. No more juice. Just like that.

I had a few long starts last year and batter lasted an other year, This week I had a really long start. I don't think I'm getting an other year. It's 3 years now.

mardi gras had the best advice!!!

the OP is also in Texas.
The Texas HEAT is not a joke and will sap the juice quicker.

I would replace at 2 or 3 years.

Very true! In fact, it is extreme heat that slowly saps the life out of a battery. However, the majority of batteries are replaced in winter. The reason we usually encounter more dead batteries in winter than we do in summer is because more cranking amps are required during very cold weather than warm weather.

Acura warranty their battery 4yrs/50K miles, I got mine replaced at no cost at around 40K miles because it's not holding charge.

Get yours replaced within the warranty period if you experience any problem. Not a bad idea to get a load test done to check the condition of the battery after a couple of years.

in the states-the battery warranty is 4yrs/unlimited mileage. I had the battery replaced on my 06 tsx under the warranty. It was 3+ years old with 90,000+miles.

Would they change the battery for you under warranty when it's "low" or does it have to die first before they change it? How does one do a "load test"...I wanna get it done just so I know I'm good for this winter.

The dealer can perform that test during regular service, which was how they discovered mine wasn't holding the charge and replaced it under warranty.

Most automotive place like Pep boys will do it especially if you removed the battery and take it inside the store.

There's a load tester that shops & dealerships use to determine the amps and therefore the condition of the battery.

My dealership was very liberal and accomodating. Even when in for my first service at about 7,xxx miles, they left the interior lights on or stereo on and it killed the battery. They offered to replace it then.

when I was getting the annual state inspection at a acura dealer they replaced the battery free under the warranty. They told me it tested low even tho I was not having any problems with it.

I had the original battery in my 1G TSX for about 5 years before I zapped it one day with the radio running a bit too long without the car running. I replaced it with an AutoZone Duralast Gold (51R I think). Don't waste your many on those Optima things. Started more quickly.

My wife's 06 Civic was starting hard for a week or so. Of course she didn't tell me until she was stranded at work. Ran by AutoZone, another 51R, and a few minutes later a new battery.

Honda tends to put even worse replacement batteries in the cars than the original.

As MadriGras said as the weather gets colder, a marginal battery is going to be more likely to fail. Autozone can also do a quick battery test. Test it and change it before it is 10 degrees and snowing outside.

Hmmm, my car is taking longer to start now and the lights flicker on and off until it starts. sign of a dying battery? I thought it might be my LEDs or HIDs

should be in the warranty book-On my 06 it is on page 29. On page 36 it explains the replacement battery warranty-The first 36 months it will be replaced free then it is pro-rated.

Just before my 1st battery died, the lights would flicker alternately with the starter on the compression stroke at start up. It really is embarrassing to have a relatively new car with a dead battery.

car died today after running approx 4-5 min with music. i stream via bluetooth from my iphone. it suddenly stopped streaming. i attempted to reconnect through my phone and was confused, phone was fine, but no sound from car. after a moment the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree, and i knew it was the battery. all interior LED's were off, and foglights are disconnected. HID's may have been on, but still. 4-5 min to fully kill the battery? crazy. it wouldn't even try to crank, it was dead dead. luckily i keep cables in the trunk, and my friend came to jump the car. still i was on a main road, and as HD said. its embarrasing to see my 2010 ACURA to need a jump start after a few minutes. i've jumped this car probably a dozen time in less than 2 years, along with the occasional hard start and longer than usual crank. really a pitiful battery. tried to get it replaced a few months ago, and no go. maybe i'll try it again. i know how to jump my car, and luckily friend came to help, but my sister drives the car a majority of the time until jan. and often, this will happen at bad times, like 3am

Got a new one before it did not start.

I brought car to Acura today to check battery, sure enough they replaced it. I had the car 3 years and 35k miles. It is now a CCA of 500 was the factory less like 425?

I'd just take it to the dealer and have them check it. Or any Autozone can test it. Batteries are not failproof. Cells can short out, or diode fail and that will leave the battery with reduced capacity. If you take it to the dealer and it is defective you could get a replacement under warranty. You may end up with another cheap Honda battery but it won't cost you. If you want a better battery you could replace it but it will cost you ~$120. It probably won't leave you stranded though. Get it checked out. As the temps get colder the problem could get worse.

my car did this when the first one was on its way out....then recently happened with the 2nd on my TL. first was replaced under warranty, the 2nd...eh...went aftermarket. acura/honda batteries are crap. the battery is actually a 100 month battery. yeah...right. get used to it...OEM batteries are known to crap out in the first 6 months of ownership or last 5-6 yrs. so...you take your chances. both OEM batteries i had last about 3 yrs each.

Just now replacing our 2009 tsx battery at 47k after 3 years 2 months. Telltale sign is headlights flickering on and off 3-4 times when engine turns over at night because there isn't enough cranking power to start engine and keep headlights on steady. When you reach that point you have a week to a month max left. Don't delay since replacement with a better 100 month battery is free under warranty

not the battery warranty. acura has a 100 mos battery (which won't ever get near that).

wow: I would have thought you would be one that read all the manuals from cover to cover and would know about the warranty. This is meant as a compliment. My tsx had 90K+miles when the dealer replaced it free under the warranty

I hate dealing with my dealership especially after the whole GPS navigation issue (which is still not fixed by the way) so i'd expect them to come up with some BS and not replace it. Plus I don't feel like driving 45 minutes away just to put up a big fight and have them try to step all over me because I'm just a kid, just for them to not replace it or only replace it after a big commotion. lol.

A problem like this really should be a non-issue. It's a known problem, don't eat something that's under warranty that wasn't any good when it was new, ya know?
