Finally did a test drive
I finally got around to checking out the TSX in person, and I did a self test drive in a white TSX with tech package.
Positives:
- I was genuinely pleased with the looks of the car, including the front end. I think it looks much better in person, and has a good, bold, sleek design.
- The sound system in the tech package is fantastic.
- I really like the inclusion of a backup camera -- sure it's gimmicky but it's also really nice.
- The seats and the car's layout in general are very comfortable. I can tell it's a good long distance / commute car.
- The gauges are really nice. I found them very easy to read. The whole dash is nice.
- I found the electronic steering pretty intuitive, and easy to control. I think Acura did a good job. Sure it's not a sports car, but the TSX has good handling.
- The ride is very smooth and quiet. Acura/Honda did a good job with sound insulation. At freeway speeds, the TSX is still very quiet and pleasant to drive.
- I like the paddle shifters. If I get an auto I will use drive mode almost universally, but I like having shifters on the steering wheel, which is by the way very comfortable and beefy.
Negatives:
- The TSX really needs another engine option. The I4 provides decent power, but I could tell another would really help. The I4 just sounds a bit whiny and strained when pushed to really move the car. I think a smoother V6 would be nice, or a more powerful Turbo I4 (gas or diesel).
- I was frustrated by some aspects of interior material quality. The interior is great overall (quite upscale), but if you really look at a few specific parts, they feel a bit dingy. The over abundance of cheap plastic is what frustrated me. The centerpiece of this is the replacement of chrome door handles with silver plastic ones.
Overall The 09 TSX is a fine car, and is a nice improvement (in many areas) over the previous generation, as long as you take it for what it is: more luxurious, smoother, and bigger. It is less sporty, and needs a better engine to power its heavy body, but the new TSX still a respectable performer on the road.
I think with the addition of a fuel efficient and torque heavy turbo diesel, the TSX will be near the top of my new car list.
