Does this floor jack work?

I got it at Harbor Freight. It is 3 tons, which is fine.

The problem is that it's not low-profile. Does this look right?

The jack fits under the car with just an inch from the bottom of the bumper.

Also, the jacking point on the floor jack has an open cup. Am I supposed to buy a block of wood to put over it?

Thanks

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-s...ump-68048.html

I am really hoping I didn't buy the wrong one.

that's fine and it will work....

Remember to use jack stands before you get under the car... especially with harbor frieight jacks.

As iCrap said, it's fine to use the cup directly with the jacking point. I've done this several times already; the underbody has not crumpled by any means.

I don't have a low-profile jack either. I use 2 layers of 2x8s to get enough clearance. However, my car does not go up the 2 layers all at once. Let your car go up one layer first, then another layer, to avoid scraping if she's low.

I use something similar to this, but with only 2 levels, minus the gradient edges because I'm lazy to saw them.

Whoa at these questions

Im sorry if this causes offense but just making sure you dont get hurt... you HAVE used a jack before correct? You have jack stands too I hope?

I ask because that is a pretty standard looking jack right there. Not sure why youd have questions. Most jacks have a cup sort of attachment. This allows the lift point to be more secure in case it slips.

You're good to go with what you have... assuming you have jack stands.
You dont need any 2x4s from what I can see.

Just position the jack like you did in the first picture and make sure that raised section of the frame sits inside the Cup of the jack. Once you get the car up put the car on secure stands and leave the jack for extra support if not in the way.

Never leave the car on a Jack alone and break your lugs BEFORE lifting... oh and make sure your ebrake is on and youve got blocks if you need them. Be safe, not sorry.

P.s. There are also videos on youtube that would help.

xtcnrice thats a crazy ramp! lol lol

My front lip hangs too low for my low profile jack but I just use one 2x4 for each wheel so Im not lugging around a huge ramp like that.
With the front wheels on 2x4s I still have to lift my front lip bu hand to get the low profile jack underneath.

im literally a beginner. i am worried that if i use just the cup, the car will somehow slide off the contact point as what i have read in some other people's posts about their car collapsing. i am just trying to take some precautionary measures. the jack is literally bending the liner of the car, so i think getting some 2x4's would help.

i am trying to jack the car from the front. isnt the front jack point of the car that circular bump that sort of sticks out? it just looks really small and i guess id feel more comfortable if i had some sort of rubber thing making contact with the car's steel frame.

yes i have jack stands, im planning on putting 2 jack stands on each side. i also will use chocks.

lol! Yeah that's not mine I have something way more basic than that; simply 2 2x8s stacked on top of each other without the gradients and the giant block at the end lol. Oh and mine aren't all glued together either haha

You are correct. The spot in the first picture right above the cup is the jack point. I believe there is even an arrow pointing to it.

I have a harbor freight jack with the cup end as well. It is not the same jack but the jack plate is similar.
I jack my ILX from the same spot in the picture you posted. However if you can see you are bending something then I would stop and wait for someone local to help maybe. I you are using that jack point nothing should be bending though.

Good luck OP.

yea, you can't really see it but if you look at the first pic again, the top part of the jack is touching the liner. that's why i feel that i should get some 2x4's or 2x8's

What's with you guys jacking the car up from the front? The proper jack points are on the sides, front and rear. The OE jack has a slot that the jack points on the sides drop into. Too bad the OP bought that big axle jack. They also have a nice aluminum 1.5 ton model that is pretty low profile and pretty fast; I'm not a HB fan, but it is a nice jack. I use a small piece of 2x4 with a slot cut into it that the raised lip on the car slips into, and it sits on the cup of the jack.

my friend used his 1.5 ton aluminum low profile and it broke. that's why i opted for the 3 ton. i think if i just roll my car onto some 2x4's, it'll be fine.

what do you guys think of my jack adapter that i will use for the front jacking point of the car?

ive been searching the internet and people say a hockey puck works well. i got myself a hockey puck and wrapped it around with dycem material - an extremely non-slip material. fits pretty well in the jack cup.

i lift the front by jacking at the front cross member. there's an arrow pointing to the spot molded in the plastic.

the front and rear are jacking points in the service manual as well as the owners manual; sides ARE ONLY SHOWN USED with a lift or jack stands

if I lift it from the side then how do I place jack stands to hold the front off the ground

please explain

we added a block of wood on the jack cup. just when we were about to have enough clearance to place jack stands on the sides of teh car, the jack just slowly descended by itself, dropping the car back down.

It's okay he's old.

Perfectly fine jacking it from the front OP at the jack you bought it perfect as well. You are better off with a 3 ton than a 1.5 any day of the week.

As for the liner, you are fine bending it a little. I literally have to lift my front lip up like an inch and rest it on the jack just to slide the jack under the lift point.

You're fine getting some 2x4s if it makes you feel better. Same for the puck.

then the jack is broken or the piece of wood collapsed.

dont use wood. just use the FARKING JACK like the rest of us.

i even posted a service manual picture so you get the point.

I jack the car up from the front/back so that I can place jack stands on the sides. Otherwise, my jack would be in the way and I wouldn't be able to put it down on stands.

I stand corrected. Since the jack that is included with the car lifts the car from the side, it never occurred to me to lift it from the front or the back. I still won't/wouldn't by the way (never been a fan of the one jack method), but I see now why it's evidently popular. As far as jack stand placement goes, once the car is up, there are numerous places where a stand can be placed.

You want to use jack stands period like I said earlier.

Even if you dont get under neath... do you really want to have a wheel or two off the car and the jack fail...

i am gonna jack the car up from the front with my non-slip hockey puck adapter, put two stacked 2x8's under each of the wheels, and then put 2 jack stands on each side of the car as well. might seem overkill but i'd rather go batshit insane than have my head squashed.

My tsx is so low, I have to REMOVE the cup adapter on a low-pro jack, in order to get under the jack point. Maybe someday I'll save $$ for air-ride.
