cracked fog light lense repair

This weekend I took on the project of repairing my cracked fog light lenses.

I used laminix to hold the lenses together, but this still allowed water to get into the fogs and cloud up the lenses. Furthermore the laminix got hazy over time.

My future goal is to put in yellow bulbs while keeping the clear lexan

Acura used glass lenses in my 2010 tsx v6. I am not sure if the 2011+ models

I didnt take pictures during the project sorry for this, but I do have pictures of the completed project.
I purchased a sheet of clear lexan from home depot for $3.99

I then baked open my fog lights and trace out the circular lense using the housing.
After cutting out the lenses I needed to sand down the edges and test fit the lenses.

Then I used GE silicon lexan/glass sealant for windows and applied a bead all around the housing and lense and then another layer on top of the lense where the black ring snaps to hold the housing and lense together.

has this happened to you? from my google search similar lexan polycarbonate with the same .093 thickness has a temperature rating of up to 280F.

up to 280°F, and yes I've heard of people's fogs melting after doing this mod. I think sitting in traffic, with standard bulbs in there it gets VERY hot.

Fogs in my jeep came with plastic lens and no melting issue.

So IMO if you use the proper material it will be fine.

Bagodonuts maybe you should stick to facts you know......heard about it doesn't help.

Also there are many possible reasons why one person mod fails and others do great.

Without details its all BS.

$100 exLED list WHY! vs. 20 on eBAY.

after googling melted lexan lenses i found this thread
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-problems-fixes-117/lexan-lens-587345/

i removed the metal brackets inside the reflector bowls, maybe that piece gets too hot for the material as it did cause burn marks on my yellow laminix.

I guess the only way is to test these over time. I will report back with results.

i did 3 minutes of research. there are a GABILLION grades of LEXAN.

Some are made special for auto lenses.

where did you get the lens material from? what is its exact name and grade.

this is from the company that makes LEXAN: and this page alone shows 3 grades for 'auto forward lens' and looking around you can see there are hundreds of types and grades.

Less than 6 months after owning my 06 tsx I noticed both foglights were cracked. Luckily the dealer replaced them free as a one-time goodwill. I then put rockblocker on them. No problems with that.

i am not sure what grade this is.

I got it at home depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/LEXAN-10-...x#.Ua4IEkDVCuk

i tried searching the part number for a spec sheet but nothing comes up except home depot results.

no worries. i think you will get some use out of it.
maybe you can cut a few sets if these yellow after a year or two. once you have one set fit swapping should be rather easy/

i dont see anything wrong with this solution.

if you lens is gone this is better than buying another stocker due to cost.

or if you still have lens its either this or some type of rockblocker or lamin-x. I got the 40 MIL from lamin-x and have been lucky so far.

LOL, no shit!?

anyway - I don't think Home Depot carries high performance Lexan material - but yes removal of the metal ring helps but might not stop the melting.

why don't you search for 'lexan fog lights melted'

ahh i see the bubbling. that is disappointing but I guess now that I already put in all of that effort I will just run them until they show signs of melting. Even then a few bubbles is better than shattered glass of the original lenses.

I think it will be good to see how they hold up in houston summer with 100 degree heat.

I was just trying to warn you in advance dude....and I didn't know you were in Houston as well - already hot as hell out there; just went to lunch and walked outside

also, HIDs run a little cooler if you're into that.
Personally I turned my fogs into DRL and put 30w LED bulbs in that run very cool.

thanks for the heads up man. yeah houston i work on the northwest side of 610. Its not even July-August yet, its already in the 90's

Led's would be a good idea I need to get the materials to wire them up independent of the DRL.

I was thinking about doing this as well but got scared of all of the lexan melting stories. Anyone have a suggestion for a material to use?

Update it has been over a month with these lexan lenses and I have had no issues at all. No bubbles, hazing or any signs of melting. Keep in mind I dont run the fogs during the day. Only at night.
