Climate control question

Now that Fall has arrived near me, I no longer need the AC in the car anymore. However, I noticed that anytime I turn on the climate control system...I hear the AC running. I know if I hit the "AC" button it turns off the AC compressor.

I was just wondering if the AC always comes on by default every time you start up the climate control system? I even tried just hitting the fan speed button to turn on the system, instead of hitting "Auto" but I still hear the AC come on initially.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Most of the time, the A/C turns on, depending on outside temperature and inside/outside temperature differential. The only time where the A/C does not turn on (in my experience) is when it's very cold outside (below freezing). My standard procedure is to hit A/C right after AUTO to turn off the compressor, unless I want A/C...
