Changing TSX oil for the first time.

My TSX oil life is on 20%, so Im guessing it is time to change the oil..

Since it is my first time changing the oil, should I take it to the dealer to get it done or is it the same if i take it somewhere like KOST or Pepboys..

Also what oil do you guys use and why?

Thanks.

its not time yet!!
when its less than 15% then it will warn you.

dealers and or chain shops are the same. if you get a "good" technician, he'll take care of your car.
if you get Lazy technicians, they wont care and use air tools that will exceed torque values.
so, it's a hit or a miss.

the recommended oil for your car is a 0w-20.
you cant go wrong using the 0w-20.

No, no and NO!

While you are right that it all comes down to the tech, there is a lesser chance of getting somebody at the dealership who just decides to skip the oil change.

You've seen my "iffy lube" report and you've seen the NBC report on Jiffy Lube. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to a chain.

There are three acceptable choices:

DIY - keeping all receipts and keeping records
Trusted local mechanic - you can ask for recommendations in your regional forums
Dealer

If the chain screws up and you spew oil all over the highway at 60mph, then the iffy lube place will blame it on the car, you, the phase of the moon and everybody else.

If the dealer screws up then you call roadside assistance and get the car towed to the dealer. No pointing if fingers or the like.

Eventually you'll get a stripped drain plug. The iffy lube guy will blame the last guy. You do it yourself and it won't happen. The dealer does it - they fix it on their dime.

Me? I have prepaid maintenance for 60k miles. That probably costs $100 more than the iffy lube place over the 60k miles but is far easier.

^meh, dealers arent any better. ive seen cars fall off the lift at dealers.
my oil pan drain bolt was over tightened by the dealer.

it just depends on the tech.
if the tech cares about his job and the vehicle, he will do an exceptional job

Check with selling dealer you might have first on on them. Which was the case with me. As others have said stay away from places like jiffy lube! I would do it myself or let Acura do it.

I always do it myself.. but the dealer should be just fine.
Take it to HONDA not acura, because it's quite a bit cheaper.

Avoid jiffy lube.

I thought in the other oil thread it was said that taking it to 15% each time ended up in bad things over the span of ~100k+ miles.

the system must run conservative intervals because of dummies.
the difference between 4000mile interval and a 6000 interval is pretty much nil and wouldnt affect anything later in life unless you're just not changing the engine oil and filter

Sure, and my BMW dealer ran my car into a pole and "forgot" to mention it when I came to pick up my car.

They'll fix or replace it. What will the iffy lube folks do when the car drives into the pit? They'll haul it back out, dust if off and deny they did it.

Since when has iffy lube removed drain plugs? I thought they just suck it out thru the dip stick tube.

I assumed you bought new. I was trying to see how far you got before it indicated a change was needed.

Changing the oil on this car is very simple to do yourself. Go grab an OEM filter from Lamacchia, Honda City or Crest. Pick up a new crush washer for the drain plug too while you are at it. They cost around a dollar. Go to Wally World and get a 5qt jug of 0W20.

Seriously, this is one of the easiest cars to change the oil on.

They raised my Marauder too high and scuffed the roof. Said nothing to me until I noticed it and got pissed off. Needless to say after an argument (can you believe they argued with me) they fixed it.

Its completely worth the $110 for the dealer to change oil/filter/rotate.

While the process is easy, the supplies you need, disposal, tools and time wasted it just not worth it. If I had access to a lift, I'd do it myself all the time.

How do you figure it's worth $110?
I can do the same thing at home for $20 in 30 minutes. OR i can go down to Honda and get the SAME service done for $30.

$30 at Honda? That isn't for synthetic oil is it? Pretty cheap. $110 on the other hand is still a lot. What is it if you don't want the tire rotation. I know you can pay places like 100 for lifetime tire rotations or places like Costco, Sam's, BJs rotate for free if you buy tires from them.

It is synthetic, it's standard now (that's what the guy told me anyways).
Same price with or without rotation.

$110 is stupid and overpriced.

I rotate my own tires anyways.

You are looking at maybe $150-$200 in tools/supplies to have everything you would need to change the oil in your car. That includes a hydraulic jack, 2 jack stands, socket/torque wrench, oil filter wrench tool (optional), funnel, and a drain pan.

For me, it's not about saving $ on my oil changes. I change my own oil because 1) I actually enjoy doing it 2) It saves time 3) I trust myself over any mechanic.

Well true, you need to buy the supplies but it's a one time thing rather than spending $100+ each time to get it done.

And like you said, I change it since i trust myself over the lazy mechanic and I can do it much faster than going to the dealer and waiting 2 hours for them to get around to doing it.

Not sure i will be doing it myself that often anymore though, since the local Honda express lane will change it in 10 minutes and let me watch, wash the car also all for $30. .. Not bad.

Subtract $35 for rotation. Full synthetic.
You all tell me. That was the quote from 2 acura dealers for a1/b1
A local honda none dealer shop wanted $111

Perhaps I am not asking correctly.

In my opinion. Rotating or changing oil without a lift is a messy PIA. Much rather pay a shop. My only concern at shops is gettin genuine honda filter.

That's insane... my honda dealer only wants $30

And it's just fine with no lift... i own two hydraulic floor jacks and it's no issue.

Umm I don't think that's correct. I tried going onto the Honda website to check prices and they have coupons. One was $10 off an oil and filter change, the fine print reads, "Does not apply to Synthetics." So there is a difference.

I've never seen this done before @fbt and I've had a few Jiffy Lubes as my accounts and never did see them do this either.!! Alot of times Jiffy Lube orders drain plugs because thier stripped and they also order oversized because they need tap it because they cross thread the plugs. As far as sucking it out from the dipstick really doubt it. I know for a fact that they actually remove the drain plugs and that's why they have pits so they don't have to buy lifts. @fbt
