Changing the oil for my TSX
So my dad decided to finally make me change the oil for my own car...
And, this being the first time, I'm clueless.
What kind of Oil should I get? I know Synthetic is pretty good...
And also, what kind of filter?
Anything else I should get?
I know, someone who doesn't even know how to change oil owning a TSX...it's sad ]:
Which is why I'm trying to learn about this car inside and out....
Any help would be great!

good to hear you're getting your hands dirty. makes you appreciate your car more.
Get some jacks, jack stands, wheel chocks or something else to block the wheels, an oil-catch pan, a funnel and you're all set.
Type of oil depends on how picky you want to be. I'm switching over to Castrol or Mobil 1 synthetic once my free oil changes at the dealership are up. I'm probably going to go with Mobil 1 or Wix filters but again it's all personal preference.

I prefer changing my own oil. The reason is it is your car so you will always make sure to do the best job possible. The problem with shops, is they have the rush to get things done and will try to quickly push through jobs. So they will not let the old oil drain out fast enough, over tighten oilfilters etc..
Some times the oil filter might not be changed. This happened to my dad, he put a small mark on the oil filter and when he got it back from the dealer the little x mark was still there. He let the dealer know![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Plus shops will use the cheapest oil filter for max profit margin. When you do it yourself, you can put the much higher quality purolator pure one filters and choose your oil.
I do my own service and I am not a mechanic, but its worth knowing how to do your own service and be a bit self sufficient. But then again I like doing it as well.

Good to hear you're doing your own oil changes, especially at 16

Haha! Thanks guys, I actually just finished changing the oil.
It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, took about an hour haha.
This is not something someone should pay someone else to do....LOL.

So did you make your old man show you how to do it? Only seems fair since it was his idea. I don't agree with your sentiment concerning doing it yourself. Though I do pretty much all the maintenance on my 05 and my wife's 07, I can certainly understand why someone would rather pay to have any of it done. There are so many places that do oil changes for cheap now, saving money is probably the last reason to do it yourself.

It's really easy to do yourself though, and you know that if you do it and put in effort and time, it'll be a good job, and not one of the cheap cruddy jobs you might get from someplace cheap

good job kid!
the synthetic oil for my wife's rdx was $60 plus $40 for labor at the dealer. i cringe everytime i get an oil change for $100.
at first i didnt know anything about synthetic oil and was completely shocked that it actually cost that much. i was so used to paying $3-$5 for oil on my prelude.
im paying $40 for oil change/labor for the TSX. im tempted to try it out since you only said it took an hour of your time. id have to invest in a jack and some stands then. i know you can buy the filters and washer from the dealer.

I read the manual and researched how to do it online, and did it while he supervised. If I did something wrong then he would tell me. So yeah, kinda I guess haha.

When I was 16 I was driving a 14 year old used vehicle that burned oil and required adding some marvel magic oil to keep it going well

Haha! I actually don't change the washer.....do you really need to?
I buy the oil and filter myself....always top quality. Hey I put premium in it, why put in cheap oil? LOL.
But I always look at the autozone papers and try to get oils and filters while they're on sale or special or something.
I'm lucky enough that my dad already had everything I needed so it wasn't that difficult! haha. hardest part was finding a tool to take that oil filter off!

^ Yes, the washer is a one-time use "crush" washer which is supposed to create a tight seal. If you're not leaking oil, then you should be fine, but I would replace it next time.
Re: the tool to remove the oil filter, I had the same problem. The oil filter is supposed to be hand-tightened, not sure why the dealership/factory tightens it so much.
What brand of oil filter did you use?

The tool, haha. Luckily my dad had the tool so it all worked out.
I used a Bosch oil filter.
