2012 TSX, Should I trade in 2005 TL?

Hey all,

I have a 2005 Acura TL with 182k miles. She drives fine and I have no payments but im thinking of upgrading to a 2012 TSX with 40k miles for $20,000. I can get 7k out of my TL.

What would you guys do? Is the 2012 TSX a good car? Also whats the difference with a tech pckg or no tech pckg? Thanks FAM

Depends on what you want and what you're looking for. I think you can do better than 20k for a car with 40k miles. I've only had mine a few months but I love it. My buddy has a tl type s which is what I originally wanted but I couldn't find one in a stick shift for the price/mileage I was willing to pay. I still love the looks of the tl but if your car is still usable and you don't have my major repairs coming up maybe hold on to it if money isn't a concern and you are looking for a newer ride then go for it!

A lot of us are money conscious, so that'd be the biggest "no" factor, but if you're not in the 99%, disregard. The other "no" factor for me would be the back seat space.

TL - bigger back seat, V6 power, more mods and aftermarket support.

TSX - smaller, I4 or V6 depending on what you're looking at, no aftermarket parts, tech package is probably the same quality as the 3rd gen TL. The 2012 would also mean higher tabs and insurance.

I would purchase a new Accord Sport for $23k than a TSX for $20k. Based on my experience driving TSX loaners, I think it'll be very difficult for a TL owner (even a 2005) to adapt to a TSX.

Hmm I never drove the accord sport but the 4 banger TSX was a bit underwhelming. Im just concerned with the TL's tranny. I know they tend to go bad. Also my front suspension is going bad. All these repairs add up you know.

I cross shipped both TL generations against the TSX when I was first looking because the dealer had a couple of "old" TLs still on the lot (in odd colors). The new TL felt isolated and much bigger. The old TL drove nicely but had an awful turning circle. The TSX felt more nimble and lighter.

You need to weigh the costs of upcoming repairs against the increased costs of buying a newer car.

if you can get 7k out of your TL with 182K miles i would get rid of it but like hddnav said I would look at a Accord Sport - they are very nice cars!

I went from an '02 TLS to the '09 TSX 6 spd.

I had a bit of trouble adapting, even though I really liked the TSX.
I took the TL out the other day, first time driving it since before Christmas. LOVED it, great pickup and smoooth, big cabin etc. The TL's are great vehicles.

Came back, took out the TSX for a while....and I LOVED it ! LOL
It's seats offer more comfort, handling is better, and fun factor as good or better than my admittedly older gen TL.

I think the TSX may be under appreciated by many folks. This is a darn good car.

the manual in the car makes the motor come alive. it's amazing how much fun the car is when you're heel-toeing into the next corner. let that motor sing. it won't get you from apex to apex the quickest but it'll be a fun time doing so.

I wish I knew this feeling, and hence, wish I had a 6MT. With that being said, I think the feeling I get taking an apex with speed/confidence is similar; probably lacking in thrill a little bit because it isn't as technical with paddle shifters. Even though this 5AT is old and the gears are long, in tight turns my car fairs very, very well (I do have coilovers and Progress RSB though). She always manages to put a smile on my face. But yes I do wish I could rev match and shift a bit quicker than the slushbox does.

What I hate most about the 5AT are the long gears. 3rd is terrible. I'd get eaten up by cars I feel I could take if I had a 6MT when I'm in a 5AT-3rd gear. There's this feeling of a sudden loss of power when I shift to 3rd (mostly WOT), but it certainly feels like ages before the RPM climbs. This isn't a huge deal for me however, since I mostly "hoon" the thing on tighter turns and curvy, slow-medium speed roads. The car is a whole lot of fun when the road is semi-technical. The car is without a doubt slow in a straight line, but I can live with that in a 4 banger TSX.

With all this being said though, I do love the car. It might be because I came from a 99 2G TL with the worst possible 4AT Honda transmission in history, but I do genuinely feel like this car will be one I keep for many, many years to come (unless I somehow come across a large pile of cash in the near future; unlikely).

OP, 20k IS a lot of money. Paying more for a TSX (which sounds like a downgrade, as hinted by urbanstereo) does sound counterproductive. But the car will certainly last as long as your 3G TL did, if not longer.

Is it certified?? I got mine for 20K certified for 42K miles. So if you're getting it certified then its a good price and I recommend the TSX. Just got mine 2 months ago. I still catching myself staring back as I walk away EVERYDAY!!!

I recently purchased a 2012 TSX V6 w/out tech package and love it! Wish it was MT but is what it is. I payed 18,999 with 24K so I'm sure you can find a better deal.

Non-tech packages take a much bigger hit.
