2010 VW GOLF GTI five door.
Someone tell me why I shouldn't get one of these cars? Don't worry the flame suite is on and I've got my hater shield to max so fire away.
It can't be any less reliable the the 2G TSX. Seriously, with all the problems people have been having with this car I can't see VW being any worse.
Constructive criticism is appreciated. Running off at the mouth is pretty pointless.

No doubt the MK6 GTI is a hell of a car. I would be hard pressed to pick one up over an MS3, though. $40k for a nicely optioned GTI would be hard to throw down, and VW's recent packaging setup for the GTI is aggrivating...they bundled the least desirable options with the most desirable ones. Sucks.
Hope we get the R20!

It depends. My mom had a MKIV Jetta (2001), and it was trouble free for 80k-ish miles.
My buddy also has a 08 GTI as his daily driver, that also has been trouble free since day 1.

I have nothing against the GTI, I always thought it was a solid car and I hear they are pretty fun to drive. The interior is kind of dead though and it does not have a "luxury" feel to it. Its a great car, its just different from the TSX. And you can extract alot of power if you chip it

With the Tech package and leather it's 35K. That's what we paid for my wife's premium TSX. My Tech was 42K. I don't care for sunroofs and if you opt for a sunroof it only comes with cloth seats.
So I'm not sure how the Golf GTI is more money.

From what I understand, VW/Audi have greatly improved reliability over the past few years, but I seriously doubt it will be as trouble-free, on average, as any Honda. Remember that on these web forums, lots of folks complain about all sorts of stuff, and often those having good experiences are the silent majority. Moreover, only a tiny fraction of owners are on here, so you're not getting a representative sample. So yes, the current gen TSX has had some issues, but I'd bet few European cars will match its reliability over time. Just look at Consumer Reports, True Delta, or others that measure such things using relatively large samples.
That said, if VW/Audi continues in the right direction, I could envision another in my future. They are wonderful drivers' cars.
If you're interested in something more performance-oriented in five door hatch form, look at the Mazdaspeed 3, which is an amazing machine. I almost bought one, but decided I wanted something a little less extreme for the daily grind in and around Center City Philadelphia.

"All the problems"? Huh? The Problems/Fixes subsection of this forum is basically a ghost town relative to other enthusiast sites. I'm not sure the 2010 TSX has a single known major issue besides perhaps premature break wear.

Before buying my tsx, if there was one car I would've bought other than my tsx which I love, would have been the mkV gti. The car can go 0-60 in 6 seconds flat. (TSX does 6.7 see caranddriver) The interior has a great fit and finish, the way the car is put together there is ample room in the back and trunk. And now the mkVI is even nicer! However, tsx has improved as well. They're the 2 best fwd vehicles on the market under $30k (U.S.) Depending on whether you want a sports sedan or pocket rocket is what it should come down to. And what kind of deal you can get on either vehicle.

VW's are hit or miss. My brother had a Passat with electrical issues that they could never resolve, and they ended up giving him a 100,000 mi 10yr warranty because if them. Nice, but he still had the annoyance of being left stranded from time to time. Now my buddy had the same car- no issues.
They drive great, but I would not risk having issues. After living with a POS Explorer for 6 years, I don't want to go thru that again. I will stick with Honda or Toyota thank you.

I would go surf a VW forum and see what the common problems are for the GTI. Maybe you can get a sense of how reliable they are.
An A3 or A4 wagon would fit my needs and I've always liked them, but I'm afraid to take the plunge.

You can't really go wrong with the MkVI GTI, VW has been manufacturing all the Golf model back in Germany for the past few years, the quality has improved.
Have you look at the Audi A3? Get the S-line FWD model for C$38K.
I looked at both the MS3 and the MKV GTI back in 08, but settled with the TSX because for me, it's time to move on to a sedan.

I think every manufacturer has occasional lemons with all models. Though you really need to look at overall populations and averages. Honda/Acura typically is always in the top/near the top for reliability (look at 3-year and 5-year averages), while VW is usually mid-pack/lower. However, I think this gen of the GTI has supposedly improved greatly compared to the last gen.

I had a look at the Golf on Saturday. Very nice interior but the car is a 'different' class of car. I'm not sure where it fits because it has a way nicer interior then any other hatch I've looked at including the new SP3.
I didn't test drive it because apparently with all the new sound deadening materials the car does 0-60 in 6.9 sec. Not much faster then the TSX if at all. I'm sure with the torque it has it would make the car much more drivable then the TSX though. I will probably have a closer look at it this Saturday.
Not sold on it though. The five year trend for this car has been dismal at best.

I like the center console on the TSX better - also, 1 point I didnt see anyone mention - is where is this car assembled? From last I heard it was assembled either in Mexico/South America - this was the reason for a lot of the electronical problems with the VW's. Might want to look into that - remember quality and workmanship is important as well!

I drove a GTI before I bought my TSX. I thought the TSX had a more luxurious feel and better ride (pretty sure the 18" wheels on the GTI were the reason for that).
I also like the interior design of the TSX better, but the stereo on the GTI did rock. My Father-in-law was with me when I drove the GTI and he said "Why you test driving a station wagon?" Of course he knows very little about hatches (from the miscle car generation).
The thing I hated most about the GTI was the accelerator. Some serious lag between pressing the gas and the car moving.

I compared the two very closely before buying. In the end, I just couldn't justify spending that much on the GTI. When you load up the GTI option for option agains the TSX (with Nav), the price is essentially the same (GTI just a hair more expensive). But the fully loaded GTIs are hard to come by, at least in my region. So dealers aren't willing to haggle much over the price, whereas the TSX can be had for far less than sticker.
The GTI does feel nice and has a solid, planted feel. One major gripe is that it doesn't have climate control...not even an option.
If you're into more of the driving dynamics and less into creature comforts, go with the GTI. Otherwise the TSX is a tough value to beat.

GTI is a very fun car to drive and the dsg tranny is the best auto I have driven in a long time. They Tsx would be better for long trips and stuff as its more comfortable but nowhere near as sporty. I will say that VW has some issues with reliability as my gf's gti has been in the shop 3 times for warranty work in the first year compared to my tl thats a lot cant really say anything about the tsx reliability as I don't have one just test drove it.

My buddy just picked one of these up in the black just the other week. Awsome car, looks great and drives well, but the track record that VW has just made me a little worried for him. VW looks great, but for that money a month you can go out and get an Audi or something, none the less its a cool car, i just like Acura much better, problems and all

Dependability is still a concern... This is coming from a Lemon Law attorney I know. Otherwise, the interior in the new GTIs is very upscale and the car handles really well for a front-wheel drive.
