2010 J.D. Power: Acura TSX is the 2nd most reliable car in its class

Very interesting...
The surprise isn't the TSX in # 2, but look which car is in # 1!
Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised by all the domestic makers on this list, either at # 1 or # 2. Even those domestic brands that are no longer around.
I'm an 80s kid so my impressions of domestic cars were formed on old POS like Chevy Citation (main crankshaft bearing blew up at 60K miles) and Ford Escort (drank / burnt one whole quart of oil every 100 miles), so needless to say I've been a import devotee my whole life -- but -- I'm well aware that as times change sometimes you have revise your old notions.
I still skittish but I'm becoming more intrigued by the domestics models.

good for domestic cars, but i still have my doubts.
i remember reading either a R&T article or a motortrend article about how they named Cadillac Catera best vehicle of the year, and later saying they regret it because those things fall apart after 5-7 years.
It would be interesting to see how these domestic cars that made the list hold up in 5-7 years.

im curious as to how they grade the reliability of brand new cars?
it cant and shouldnt be based on reputation alone. what other factors are taken into account when they make lists for cars that havent even been out for a year?

Furthermore, sometimes the comparisons are not really apples to apples. I bet I could make a car that had no electronics and no computers and it would rank higher than most of today's cars. But that car would suck donkey nuggets.

I agree with you. i looked real hard at the A4 (those DRL's rock) but just couldn't justify paying the premium over the TSX for a car with less standard equipment. I know Audi's have come a long way in the reliability department and if the A4 had been a 3 or 4 grand cheaper I would have totally gone for it. But like I said, maybe some day.

I hope some of these ratings are accurate. The more reliable cars are, the more choices we have when it comes to buy. Personally, reliablility is one of the most important factors in a car. Even the nicest car can sour my experience if I'm in the shop all the time. Hopefully when it comes time to buy again, there will be even more cars considered reliable.

I'm looking at getting a new S4 in the next 2-3 months, and I cannot for the life of me believe that in order to get MEMORY FKN SEATS I'd have to buy the car in Prestige Package. It's not even an option in Premium Plus. I don't want all the other stuff in the prestige package. I want a premium plus with memory seats and navigation. But nope, have to get prestige for memory seats. Frustrating.
However, I drove this car last weekend. That engine + quattro + 7 speed DSG = JIZZ. I can live without memory seats.

My neighbor across the street has two A4s, one sedan and one wagon. The wagon has been flat-bedded twice in the past 5-6 months lol.
I love the bodylines and grille/headlights/etc on the new Audis but I'm just not going to do that to myself haha.

I hear ya. And they strip so much out of the base model A4 that they make it look ugly. I really hate that about BMW and Audi. Mercedes' still look nice in base form.

I agree....
Not to turn this into an Audi thread but I do wonder about their startegy to strip the base A4/S4 of essentially everything. One has to atleast get the premium plus to get basic equipment and then like you said it does not even have memory seat or auto dimming mirrors. Spend close to 40k on a car and no memory seats or auto dimming mirrors, that is totally whack.
Oh, and those rims of the A4 base model.... oh my goodness, they just look TERRIBLE!!!

I agree with this statement. I cannot believe that the "base" models of the 3 series and A4 do not even get that chrome trim around the windows. They look so very basic and cheap, when the price is in the high 30's to start with!

Anything mechanical is bound to break; I'd much rather have an older Bmw 7 series (e38), Mercedes (W140), or an Bmw (E39). Sure their not as reliable as a Honda being as complex as today's cars or maybe even a bit more advanced but their solid and that's what counts. My dad told me I can get his tsx in two years or get one of the cars listed above, I'm always going to choose the e38, e39, or w140.

check out the truedelta ratings for reliability of the mkz this is based on owners reports.

I also cannot believe the mkz and caddy compared to the TSX. I cannot speak for the mkz but the caddy give it couple years. I have seen the falling apart, remember that after Chevy got bailed out of bk they had to cut corners. I should know, I owned a 08 Tahoe and now a 11 Traverse, never again. I have also seen and ridden in a 11 Malibu LTZ what a joke that was plus the price is outrageous. And as far as the base Audi or BMW, I have a friend who's wife leased a base BMW just to say she drives one. It's amazing how some people prefer a base German car over a loaded import or Mabel domestic.

Damn the Germans have really stepped up in reliability, i wonder if they dropped crappy ass Bosch as their electrical supplier and contracted with Korean/Japanese companies instead. I know BMW was working on lithium batteries with Samsung.

Every dealer in the area knows
I just learned something new which maybe the rest of you already know. All the dealers in your area or maybe the ones you contacted can find out that you've bought and where.
About a week after I bought my car, I got an email from one of the dealers I had contacted asking me to contact him re buying. When I wrote back to say I had bought, his reply was, " I know. Sorry" I wrote back and asked him what he meant and he said it came up that I had already bought from Executive Acura ( not the right dealership, but I'll give him that mistake ) The point is that there's a list out there which at least shares buyers' names.

E38 and W140 community is very large and DIY's are all over, I don't need to pay service costs and if I do then its for a reputable BMW or Mercedes mechanic, an indie. I picked out the TSX but German cars are better overall for me, not hondas. I like comfort

Um, the OP posted the JD Powers dependability study for 2010, meaning the previous gen TSX (2007.)
The 2010 dependability study is for the 2007 models. JD Powers dependability studies come out for the previous three year-old models. Each dependability study released is for the previous three year-old models. Come on, the Saturn Sky is on that list and the Saturn production plant shut down in 2009.
JD Powers has the 2012 dependability ratings now on their site. That is for the 2009 models.
And btw, it says:
Entry Premium Car
Lexus ES 350 (tie)
Lincoln MKZ (tie)
Acura TL
The TL and not the TSX is now the "entry premium vehicle." And all of a sudden the Lexus is now an "entry premium vehicle" when it was a "mid-sized premium vehicle" in 2007. I guess the 2009 version shrunk into a smaller car, lol.
The TSX (2009 2nd gen model) is not on their list for 2012.
Anyway, don't forget that JD Powers is an industry supported business..... take what they print with a grain of salt.
And as somebody already said, True Delta has more realistic stats from ownership data gathering then either JD Powers or Consumer Reports (and True Delta clearly explains their methodology on their website.)
