2009 Windshield Replacement

Hi- I had a crack ( about 13 '') on the front windshield of my 2009 TSX (std trim).

I checked with Radley Acura here in Northern VA and they are quoting me $1189 including labor charges.

I also checked with Horizon auto glass and he quoted me $400 for a PPG glass including labor.

What I need help from you guys to tell me if there would be any problems using the cheaper windshield. I also heard that they are some bearings, mounts, lining etc that need to be replaced when you change the windshield on Acuras( told by my dealer)

My Geico insurance policy dictates that I have a $500 deductible and they wont cover the entire amount of 1189( dealer charger $110 per hour on labor and geico says they cover only $40 and a lot of other clauses like this).

So am in a fix now whether to suck in and pay more and get OEM and ensure that all the lining etc are intact or take a chance and install PPG through a auto glass guy.

HELP!

PPG glass may cost less than the OEM glass but it's definitely not cheap glass. I think PPG glass might be made in America.

When I got a crack in the front windshield of my TL-S I went to a local autoglass shop and they said they could give me the same windshield made by the same manufacture for Acura/Honda for like a fraction of the cost of getting OEM Acura/Honda glass. The only difference was that the replacement glass didn't have Honda stamped on it. It works fine and it doesn't leak or anything.

My g/f got the front winshield of her 2009 IS250 replaced with PPG glass. It looks fine. And it was like half the price of OEM glass which was like $1,000+.

As long as you don't go for the CHEAPEST PRICED glass you'll be fine. God knows where that is made. LOL.

See if you can negotiate a better price with the dealer. Otherwise, go with non-OEM.

The glass in our car is made by AGC (http://www.agc-automotive.com/english/ )
I did a lot of research on this before i got my glass replaced last week. Then i found out that my insurance was going to cover the cost of OEM so thats what i got. I found a thread about this. https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-rdx-2007-2012-147/windshield-replacement-682343/. BTW i did get to see the NON-OEM and i could tell the difference but i don't know who made it. I am pretty damn picky so i am glad i got OEM.

I had the windshield replaced on my 2000 Accord a few years ago. Due to the circumstances (lots of travel, snow storm, lack of time to shop around) I took it to the local Honda dealer, and it cost me about 400$. I was surprised to find out that my honda dealer sub-contracted all glass replacement to General glass. They come to the dealership and do the work. They used PPG, which was fine and I never had a problem with it.

I would not be surprised if the dealer sub-contracts the job to the local glass shop and makes a huge markup...

Personally, I would go with the PPG, but I will ensure that there are no optical issues with the glass before they install it. You can also insist that they thoroughly verify the glass for distortion and defects before they install it.

Double check your deductible on our insurance. Windshield replacement due to a crack does not usually fall under a collision deductable. Seems really high to have a $500 deductible on a windshield.
