Windshield replacement

Quick question. Has anyone gotten a windshield replacement? we just got our windshield replaced this morning and I noticed that the shop replaced it with PPG windshield. When I asked about it the shop told us PPG makes OEM Honda and Acura windshield. I'm wondering if this is genuine Honda/Acura parts? They also told us that there is only one manufacturer for the RDX and this is the brand. I'm a little bit paranoid because we have full factory parts replacement insurance. When my CRV windshield cracked I had a Honda brand windshield put into it and the value was almost $300 more than the RDX's replacement.

PPG does in fact make the windshields, When Honda/Acura purchases them from PPG they get branded honda/Acura. You glass installer just ordered direct from PPG so he gets the part at distributor price, instead of going to Acura parts counter and paying their retail. Rest Assured the Glass is the EXACT same. PPG is one of the worlds biggest auto glass companies, if not the biggest, so your not getting some second rate crap.

What they installed is called "replacement" glass, described here on PPG's web-site:

PPG’s OEM Glass

PPG's automotive replacement glass is made with the same control standards, manufacturing processes, tooling and quality inspections used for PPG's original equipment (OE) parts.

As a result, PPG replacement windshields and tempered parts:

Fit closer to original equipment
Look more like original equipment
Meet the same safety standards as original equipment
Have the high optical quality as original equipment
Better fitting equipment such as is available from an OEM manufacturer such as PPG means there is less likelihood of wind noise, leakage and appearance problems.
When replacing insured parts, it is always wise to avoid "original equipment equivalent", which is lower quality, will not fit as well, and won't have the same corrosion protection, or in the case of auto glass, may be thinner or weaker. Note this (glassnet) comment on Safelite Auto Glass:

Aftermarket glass is made by companies that do not contract with any car manufacturers, and do not have the legal right to manufacture auto glass to the exact same specifications as OEM distributors due to licensing and copyright laws. Safelite is one of the main aftermarket or "original equipment equivalent (OEE)" auto glass manufacturers. Aftermarket glass is significantly cheaper than OEM or dealer glass. It's usually a different thickness than OEM glass, and most dealers will not accept aftermarket glass when you return a leased vehicle because the glass differs so much from the original design, and does not carry the same guarantees as OEM auto glass.
PPG's DOT number is 18. The glass should be marked DOT-18, and (as a windshield) the spec should be AS-1. From glasslinks:

A couple of the key characters to look for in the trademark are the "DOT" and "AS" numbers. The DOT number identifies the manufacturer of the glass, and every company that produces glass for sale within the U.S. must have a number registered with the Department of Transportation., the PPG number is DOT 18. Another important item is the "AS" number which indicates what series of tests that part has been qualified to. The "AS" is the abbreviation for American National Standard that is required in section 6 of the ANSI Z26.1-1997 specification.

To provide a general summary, the windshield of your car will carry an AS1 designation while the other pieces of glass will be AS2.

Does anyone know the actual cost of getting the Acura replacement (or PPG) window installed?

I got a crack from a rock last week....I'm pretty sure I'd have to pay the deductible with my insurance company to have it replaced and am wondering what will be the lowest cost option in the long run. Fortunately, the crack is up high and not really in the way of anything should I decide to live with it for the time being. It was one of those chips where I heard the rock but couldn't find the chip.....until the next morning when a crack appeared and, as it turns out, the chip is right on the edge of the windshield where you can't see it at all from the inside.

I had a stone put a ding in my glass. They tried to repair, but it was in my line of sight and noticeable, so the glass was replaced. I had Acura service do it.
Cost was $583 for the glass, $30 for the moldings, and $150 labor, for a total of $763. Insurance paid most of it.

I had an RDX windshield replaced in an insurance claim when ice hit the window and knocked off the wiper blade while it was wiping, causing a scratch. I have a replacement cost policy, so they had to replace with the OEM part. Acura service did it for me. Otherwise the cost would have been $550 for the glass, plus install.

I'm getting my windshield replaced tomorrow. The cost will be $900 total....mostly covered by insurance. Since insurance takes care of it, I'm getting it done at the dealer, although I'm not sure other places would be cheaper anyways.

stupid question... if I bought the car, does it matter if its OEM or PPG glass? My deductible is through the roof so I have to pay out of pocket. Safelite is the cheapest option at around $360.

Basically is the difference in quality between an OEMor PPG windshield large enough for me to pay more over an OEE glass?

For anyone in Vancouver, Speedy Glass wanted about $1100 to replace the windshield.

PPG does indeed make Honda of America's glass. When I was in grad school I helped to develop the "antenna integrated with the rear defogger" that Honda/Acura put out in the late 90's. We worked with PPG and HoA.

(If you are curious, I helped to develop an method of using an IR camera to detect "neck downs", or places where the antenna trace suddenly became very narrow. These have no impact on the DC defogger, but act as a capacitive load on an antenna and throw off the frequency response and directionality. So the closed circuit tests they had previously used to detect defects did not work. Instead they lit up the defogger and looked for bright spots and dim spots vs a reference IR image. It worked.)

I had Speedy Glass in White Rock replace with OEM PPG green tint, blue shade for a total of $765 (glass $469, urethane & molding $71, labor $143 and taxes $82). I had to pay only $200 deductible. I'm not sure why the price quoted in Vancouver was so high? Our RDX is a 2007 Tech.

I didn't actually get it replaced. Just spoke to them on the phone for a quote. Mine is a 2009 and that's what they quoted me for.

Have no idea why the price was so high. Naturally I didn't give them a callback.
