So one thing choking the power is the exhaust. They should have opened it up a lot more than that.

Catback never improves power to any significant level.

If the exhaust is opened up too much, the engine will lose low end torque, but gain hp at the mid to top end of the rpm range.

Depends on the vehicle. On the V6s in the TL/TLX models, it's normally helped with J pipes and/or exhaust systems. Not so much on the 4cyl.

the Type S has plenty of low and mid end torque but the top is dies out. from what we have seen from just a down pipe upgrade, I think the 3" inch exhaust all the way through would really open the Type S up.

on normally aspirated V6 and 4 cylinders yes. V8 and up and boosted vehicles, catbacks can do woners.

Eh, I very highly doubt that exhaust after the split is choking off a 355HP motor, forced induction or not. I was most surprised with how small the downpipe outlet was.
