Winter tires question
I have a 2002 Tl-s with stock michelins and mags. Do I get 17 winter tires and put them on these mags. Then next year buy new rims for my summer tires? Or do I buy 16 rims and get 16 winter tires?
Also what are good winter tires?? This is my first winter with this car(in Montreal Canada), I could use some advice
Thanks

if you can afford a winter tire/rim combo that is the way to go just due to the ease and no hassle of having tires remounted and balanced.
as for winter tires i have had most of them and recomend the dunlop winter sport M3 over the rest. a close 2nd is the mich artic alpin.

Depends how much you want to spend.
I would definately downsize for winter. 16 inch wheels and tires are much cheaper than 17's.
But if, say, you wanted 18's for summer then put some 17 inch winters on your Type S wheels and buy some 18's in the spring.
If you're staying in Mtl then H rated snows like Nokian WR or Pilot Alpins are fine.
If you plan to hit tremblant or the eastern townships where roads are not that great then get a true snow tire like Yoko ice guard, toyo Observe G02+ or arctic alpin.

What is winter? Oh yeah, here in San Diego winter is when it rains
Seriously though, I used to live in NY and I used Nokian tires for winter driving. They are one of the best winter tires out there.

The people at places like tirerack.com will ship you Alpins, Blizzaks, etc. already mounted and balanced on 16" steel winter wheels. This is so common you don't have to ummm, "reinvent the wheel".

I would DEFINITELY get dedicated winter snows! There is no comparison between all-seasons (even if brand new) and winter tires. They help tremendously in traction. I'd be sure to get them regardless, but especially if you are not used to winter driving conditions. However, my personal preference would be the Nokian Hakkapaliita II or older model "Q" tire. I would get those for sure over Nokian's "WR" - which is really an all-season (although would provide a bit better traction than some of the other all-seasons). The two models I mentioned are true snow tires. Nokian's are also sipped all the way through, whereas a lot of the other popular brands are not. Blizzaks and Artic Alpines are supposed to be awesome tires (one in snow and one on ice) but they are not sipped all the way through and will wear faster (won't provide the benefits of a winter tire) as long as Nokian or Gislaved. I have had experience with both Gislaved and two different Nokian winter tires. They are two of the top tires (not necessarily in general popularity since they don't do nearly as much advertising...but those who need 'em --- know 'em!).
I have also heard good things about the Toyo Ice Guard, but again - my first two choices would be Nokian and Gislaved (a Finnish and Swedish company).

I would also just get a set of steel wheels in 16's for winter... Much cheaper than getting a set of nicer rims if you're only going to use them for winter. They'll be covered in grime most of the time anyway. Use nice wheels for spring/summer when you can really show them off.

Go buy 4 winter tires for your stock 17" rims and at the same time trade in the $hitty MXM4. When summer comes, buy a new set of 18" rims and real sticky summer tires. That's what I did except that I bought the summer tires first.
