I am about to purchase a set of 4 new tires. What is the best one on the market (a good winter and summer performance)?

 

Dude, if you are in Kingston then get two sets of tires.

All season tire = no season tire. You're not driving a Camry

The time you spend riding on cheaper tires in the winter will more than pay for the cost of some 16 inch rims or steelies.

Average 17 inch summer tire = $200-$300 CAD
Average 16 inch winter tire = $100-$120 CAD

See what I mean?

The only tire that will do both fairly well would be the Nokian NRW (soon to be replaced by the Nokian WR)

 

Is there a big difference in a winter versus a summer tire? Any good tire recommendations (summer, winter, or all-season) for the stock TL rim size? Thanks.

For winter tires go for the Michelin Arctic Alpine ...I have set for the minivan.. they are just great.. they stick on ice and bite snow really well.
I have a buddy who had some Norictrac from CDN Tire..
He said they are just OK.. said they get kinda wonky above 100kph...he drives an Infitity....sorry thats InfiNity...

I think you should go for the Pilot Alpine if you consider Michelins...
Benifits over regular Alpine:
Directional
H Speed rated... not that you are going to test that out in WINTER

Bought them last year and they were great...saved my A$$ a couple of times.

 

Any good recommendation for all season tire? I heard Dunlop SP Sport A2 is good although road noise is higher than the stock tire. Any ideas?

What actually makes a "snow tire" a "snow tire"? Does it grip that much better than a normal tire?

If it grips better, can't you just use a snow tire for all year round?

Winter tires have a more aggressive tread pattern that is designed to grip into ice and shake out snow. That is why a 15 or 16 inch snow tire is more effective because the rubber flexing helps it shake out the snow. Also, the rubber compound is designed to be flexible in cold weather.

If it's 32 degrees farenheight and the roads are DRY a snow tire will still handle better than a summer tire.

In contrast, a summer tire is designed to stay sticky in hot weather but will turn to rock in cold weather.

Also you want wide tires in the summer for a wide and short contact patch, you want the opposite in winter.

All season tire = no season tire IMO. Okay for a camry but not ideal for a sports sedan.

Good winter tires:

pilot alpin/nokian nrw - h rated, good but not great on ice

nokian hakka 1/hakka q - great on ice, somewhat quiet, very substantial sidewall suitable for a heavy car like the tl

yoko guardex - great on ice, a bit of hum

arctic alpin - good on ice, quieter than yoko

blizzak - great on ice for 1 or 2 seasons until the rubber studs wear out, not my first choice

there are others but these are the ones i happen to know about

You get what you pay for! I drive a 528 30 miles one way to work with the addition of sales calls I am probably over 500 per week. If your looking for a real tire, shell it out! I replaced the set of original connentintal contact sports with the michelin pilot ps2. Its like day an night like baby, I'm on coaster ride on a floating rail at disney doing 80 mph on the off ramp, hee ha!


btw where is that rebate form? thats worth about two good cases of beer

 

I live in the snow zone of morris county NJ and also have winter tires, Bridgestones regardless their wothless with over 3 inches of snow.
