What! 17's? Got a tire problem too...

So I got my car back early last week from Discount Tire...I got some Konig Furthers (17x7.5-114) with some Kumho Ecsta 711 Tires (235/45/17). The guy actually told me that they measure in at 18" but are really 17s and I thought they looked like 18s with the design and the tires they were matched with...Then on friday I was going to the bank to cash a check from work with some guys during break and I went up and entrance...not that high and I hear this big brushing noice...I figured well...its prolly just my golf clubs and this is with 5 people in the car...Then going around a flat-surface turn at about 5 mph I hear it again. So...I stopped at a convienence store and my friends and I get out...My back Ecsta tries were hitting the top or rather the bottom of the fender...So then I go back to discount tire and the manager tells me that the tires are too wide. Which sounds quite reasonable to me. So I say ok and pick up the car on monday. They put, on the same rims, 4 Kumho Solus KH16s (215/50/17). So....they are narrower in width and are a little taller...Which I don't want. So given this information can any of you guys give me any opinions on what I should do?..I don't want to rub and I don't want my tires look like radials? Anyone else have this problem. A response or rather quick one would be appreciated...Thanks.

This is what the Konigs looked like with the Kumho Ecstas...The first set of tires.

This is the Konig Further upclose...

Or should I take them back and possibly get some Voxx Monzas as 18"s ???

I had 235/45 tires on before and they rubbed. Then I put on some 215/50 and I don't like the height even tho they don't rub. Do you think 225/45 would work?

Nothing against Konig, but I like those Voxx better.

Suprisingly, I couldn't find the offset of those wheels anywhere. Bleh.

It's difficult to tell just from that picture but it looks like the offset on those wheels are too low for our cars.

So...what would you guys do? The 17" Konigs are the same price as the 18" Voxxs ($157) but I don't know what I should do cuz I like the Konigs but I don't like the tires that much and I could get prolly a 225 with an 18" rim, or I could spend about $80 more and get those Konigs as 18"s at $177 a piece...I need help

In my 2007 wheel guide it says that the Konig Further comes in the 40 and 45 offsets...Is that the wrong offset and what offset is my 99 SSM TL-P?

If they come in 45 and 40, then the ones you have are definitely 40. All 99-03 TL's stock offset is +55. Anything lower than +45 and you generally have a problem, thought a few members on here claim to be running +40 without any modification. Anyhting that is +48 to +55 is pefect for our cars.

Honestly those wheels dont look bad, but they look bad on your car. They just arent meant to be on a 4dr luxury sedan. I'll shoot you a PM real quick, I hope you have AIM.

From the angle of the picture it looks like the Konigs stick out beyond the wheel well and they are likely 17x7.5 with a 40 offset. Even if the rim design were perfect for the 2GTL, that set-up will ruin just about anything.

So what to do? Most important don't look for the easy fix. Return the Konigs, put your stock rims back on and do the wheel research. As you've already experienced, some/many sales guys don't know jack about what will fit your TL. Make a good decision based on what you know and you can eliminate worry about rubbing and get the look you want including tire width and sidewall height. I'm saying all this cause I've been there before.

If you want to discuss more shoot me a PM.

Good luck.

Ninety9,
I would have to agree with Blueguava about his opinion with the rims and tires and return the Konigs/tires if possible; I mean the Konigs look great but will cause problems. This the 2nd gen TL is one of the most hardest cars to fit custom rims on, especially with it's stock high offset on the stock rims at +55.

Even with people claiming that +45 , 18X7.5 (even at 17X7.5), there are some people still with rubbing issues; only possible way is your car is 1) not lowered or 2) they have their cars slammed/lowered to the point where they have such negative camber to curve the wheels inward so it tucks underneath the fenders - note this second option will cause you problems later, i.e camber wear, less contact patch on road, possible poor response/handling. Let's say you do put 18X7.5 or 17X7.5 with say 225/40/18 or 225/45/18, you still might rub even if not lowered - for example on TL-P the springs might be soft and sag to create bounds to rub the wheels. I know what I am saying because I have done my research and have communicated prior to someone else having this issue with wheels/tires.

Bottom Line: Do your research. To be safe go with a rim that has +48 ( i would still kinda question this but seems like "most" people are good with this offset) and higher offset. Perferably +50. It's pretty hard to find rims with this high of an offset and that look good too.

^^ agree with 02type-s. Take it back and get the 18's for the same price. I think it would flow better with the car and it'll look better bigger. Make sure you got the right offset so everything would a perfect fit.

Would those Voxxs look alright as an 18 with a +45 offset on 225/45/18 Kumhos?

It would look alright but be aware that with 18x7.5 with +45 offset and the "45 tire profile" may still give you rubbing issues; there was some guy here on acurazine that had that setup but with a different tire brand, Avon?, and he had rubbing even without lowering his car. You can search some of my postings to see which member it was.
