torque spec questions for strut mounts

Hi Guys, i have to replace my strut mount hardware today - got some new top hats and bushings and everything. I cant seem to find any torque specs after searching. How necessary is it and does anybody have any idea?

you want to know the top nut of the strut- that holds the top on on- that one?
Did the struts come with any instructions? like how to hold the shaft still while tightening the nut
I always used an air gun to put them together- so, TIGHT !! as you can-- would be right
Thats a hefty size nut and thread combo

you have a spring compressor tool correct?
- and your health insurance card handy,,just in case the tool breaks or something happens
This is no joke!!- danger lurks with every turn of the nut on the conmpressor tool

Many people find a shop will do all the dangerous part for you at a reasonable price.
They have a much better spring compresser tool than auto parts store as well

Job I disliked most at shop:- swapping out the springs on struts, easy but dangerous

a good tug with the hand ratchet to the strut top to body mounts.
And the air gun blast to the center nut that is the strut itself

would a bad top hat cause a rattling sound over bumps?

^Is there any rubber dampening in the top mounts? OEM's should be quiet.. Unless the springs are hitting each other. My Tein springs on OEM shocks and top mounts were fine. My Tein topmounts on the my coilovers rattle over everything. Might be the spring though. I hate having lowering directly affect spring rate. Tein SS' need an adjustable body -- separate from the spring adjustment.

As far as torque specs
For the 2 nuts holding the strut bar 12lbf-ft.
For the 3 nuts holding the strut 37lbf-ft (Same for the rears)

(Per my shop manual <--- invaluable)

I cannot figure out this rattle. I'm thinking either upper ball joint or wheel bearing, but not sure and the top hat/mount came to mind as a possible culprit. How do you properly inspect a top hat and strut mount?

so, yes the top hat can affect rattling. I just installed mine yesterday, 2 new ones from acuraoemparts.com - they were like 12 a piece and 3$ for the rubber inside the top hats - mine were worn pretty bad. So , swapped mine out and all my rattling that i head on every stop and go is gone! Just one left that i cant find - top right side, over heavy bumps. a clanging. i have a brand new upper control arm so i dont know what else is left there....

how hard is it to install the top hat? I assume you have to remove the whole strut assembly correct? Anyone have a DIY for that?
