Id suggest you look around a little bit. The stock tires arent 550 a piece. Tirerack.com is a great place to start. They have reviews and specs on tires.
Also do a search on tires here in the forum. There are many good suggestions here.

I just brought some Yokohama Avid V4S tires for my 02 TL-S (which is pretty much the same car as the 03 TL-S). I will test them out tomorrow and sunday. I was also looking at Toyo Proxes 4 and if you really prefer Michelin, consider the Micheline Exalto's. Anyways, check out sites like www.edgeracing.com and tirerack.com. You should be able to find some good prices there. US$550 is enough to buy four Toyo Proxes 4 tires at edgeracing.com. Anyways, whatever you do, do NOT buy the OEM tires, just read around and you will find that the OEM tires basically suck.

Anyways.... there are alot of better tires out there that will get you a whole entire set for 4 for $500 - $600.
I replaced mine with Falken Ziex 512 for a really good deal @ 110 CAD each ( mounting and balancing included). They perform atleast 2- 3 times better and are like half the price of the stocks.
call a few shops around and try to tell each shop if they can price match or undercut the prices.

I just bought some Potenza RE960as Pole position tires for my 02 TL-S. They are awesome tires. They are a bit on the spendy side but I think they were worth it...about $165 a piece.

IMO the Falkens that I had before were not that good. Whenever I go into a corner a bit fast, my steering wheel would vibrate. I am not sure if that's because of wrong tire pressure, worn out tires, or other reasons. However, my new Yokohama Avid V4S are performing much better. Not only did the vibration go away, they also reduce the understeer by a lot. But then these are new tires, so more testing is needed before I can draw my conclusion.

Anyways, just did some more testing today in the rain. I tried to spin the tires by stepping the gas pedal hard from a dead stop. The front wheels did spin for a split sec but they quickly regained grip. If I were to do the same thing with my old tires, I would've been doing some burn out. The bottom line is, I wouldn't dare to out-accelerate a car from a dead stop in the rain with my old Falken's, but I feel more confident now with these new Yokohama's.

Back to the original statement of shop wanting $550
This writer believes that was a quote for 4 tires of
quality equal to (the cheapies) OE tires for your car
With so many members using the same 4 or 5 tires,
Follow the suggestion and go to www.tirerack.com read up on tires, see other sites,
but please, dont buy something no one here uses
