Windshield Wiper Stepping Motor Issue?

I have an issue where my wipers are erraticic sometimes they bang at the bottom of the windshield, sometimes they go so far over the drivers side will go off of the windshield and then sometimes they will work ok but the majority of the time they will be erratic. I tend to never run them because of this even on intermittent. I just wil use the wipe once feature but that it usually when the wiper on the drivers side will jump clear off the window and it is scraping the paint and ruining the rubber seal on the side of the window. I think that this might be the wiper moter as it seems like a stepping motor issue. The motor can't detect where it is at so it goes to its limits sometimes and then others not if it finds its stepping position. Or is there something else that controls this?
Any help or thoughts are appreciated. 2002 Acura TL Type-S

Also is there any picture of how to replace or where the actual motor is located on the car?
Thanks to all!

Welcome to the forums.

Since you started your own thread for this problem, I deleted the two posts you made in other threads.

Good luck in solving your problem.

There are 2 arms on the wiper transmission that go bad. Replace those and your wipers should be fine again.

has anyone ever worked on the wipers before? it seems like the wiper linkage isnt aligned with the wiper motor. if you remove the linkage with the motor just turn it around and you'l see 3 lines and an arrow on the end of the linkage. check to make sure the arrow is pointing to the middle line. if its not no matter what you do with the wipers it will always act crazy and slam down or go off the car. ill try gettin some pics of this so you can see what im talking about. if you live in the north jersey area i could check it out for u.

the plastic caps on the linkage arms wear out. Might as well replace both while you're there too, even though only one might be worn.

can i order the plastic caps from the dealer? how much are they? im having the same problem and i use them a lot.. i live in england always raining here. i thought the wind from the semi trucks was pushing them past the windshield (which is usually when they go past the windshield), being that i drive on the wrong side of the road.

I don't think so. The arms aren't that expensive though. They come with the caps pre-greased.

The Arms are around $50 shipped from online Acura Dealers. I have replaced them on all 3 of my Honda products. The plastic end caps wear out. You won't believe the difference when you change them. It's very easy to pull off the old arms and put on the new ones. Just keep track of the angle on the old arms and match them up with the new ones so that you don't put the arms on upside down. The caps come pregreased. It's a problem on our Honda products but an easy fix. It's usually not the motor assembly. Eventually the arms will just fall off as one did on my Accord. Then you won't have any wiper movement at all=this happened to me in a rain storm.

I had this same problem, I replaced the complete wiper assembly or the plastic joints, and haven't had a problem since then....

My main problem was the wipers flying off of the a-pillar!!

not to mention, the assembly is for sale in my thread!!

It's not the arms or the arms-to-linkage.

It's the linkage bushings (they break or stretch or something) and the whole linkage needs to be replaced. I lived with this for weeks, then fooled with it for days - tweaking, new wipers, etc - no dice.

Took it in and had the whole linkage replaced under extended warranty. Problem solved.
