Will After-Market Cat Clear Code?
Will After-Market Cat Clear Code?
The competent shop I had do the P0420 diagnostics on my '99 TL confirmed that it was the cat (and not plugs, 02 sensors or anything else I've read in other threads) that was failing and causing the code. He went on to say that it needed to be replaced with the Honda OEM converter because "the after-market converters probably would not be of sufficient quality to clear the P0420 code for good." Does that make sense to anyone or is he just giving me an up-sell pitch? For me, the fundamental reason for replacing the cat (I live in Indiana) is to clear the code and potentially prepare the vehicle for a private sale.I've talked to Josh at XLR8 and he seems to think the the basic cat will function just fine... but will it "clear the code for good" is my concern.
Thoughts?

I've installed one few weeks ago on my Honda Odyssey and the code hasn't come back on (p0420), now got the green light on scanner.
Been having that code on for nearly a year, keep clearing it and it keep coming back on.
Installed a Magnaflow cat, atleast that's what the seller said it was. Truth will tell sometime this year when go for a smog check.

magnaflow cats are proudly stamped with maker name
Josh will sell you a good legal cat for a great price
dont use the place you went to--they dont know the TL or are just there to upsell
It is a salespersons job to bring in more money
any small private owner honda/import type shop or muffler shop is fine, not the big corp place with its mandatory upselling
this is a simple job
reset ECU by pulling CLOCK fuse for a minute

Thanks for the input, guys. I'd planned on buying the replacement from Josh at XLR8, but wanted to make sure the the basic MagnaFlow replacement option at $170 would be sufficient to clear the code, instead of spending the $300 for the MagnaFlow "OEM Grade" replacement. Sounds as though I should be fine with the basic MagnaFlow.
