Why did this happen?

Yesterday while going to work, my engine surged forward & then the idle dropped like it was going to shut off. The 2nd time it happened it did cut off. When I restarted it the idle was low & when I put it in D, it cut off. After a few restarts it stopped doing it. As I was continuing
home the front started shuddering & the power wasn't quite there. I played w/the gas a little & it went away.
The belts look o.k., but once @ home & in park,I shifted
into reverse & into drive & heard a strange sound. Later that evening I drove around a while trying to see if these problems would come back, but they didn't. Any clues or help?
