Question Very odd engine sound

I think my valves are rattling. Whenever I am gently accelerating, I can hear a noise coming from, what I think is the engine. It sounds like metal bearings being turned inside a tumbler. I know this is a weird description, but I can't think of anything better. It's almost a rattling of some sort. Like I said, it's during light acceleration and also during light shifts from 1st to 2nd, 2nd-3rd, etc.

Help would be greatly appreciated because I am completely dumbfounded.

With 139k on the odometer, Acura is not going to cover it. I can dream though....I'm hoping this is something that can be diagnosed on the board, then I can fix at home. I like to avoid the "stealership" at all cost.

did it happen all of the sudden, or it has been doing it , and gradually getting worse?

Sounds like that are very hard to diagnose over teh net. It could be pinging, it could be valves that need to be adjusted, it could also be a spun bearing. You need to locate the source of the sound. Can you hear it while idling?

Thanks for the responses.

dreem1er,
I don't think it's the tranny. Just had that replaced in July 2006.

fsttyms1,
You can't hear it while idling....just light acceleration and the split second following gear change. It's been doing it now for a while. Just can't seem to figure it out. Maybe the power steering pump bearing??

Did you pull a few of the spark plugs and see if they look fouled?

My first instinct would be to run a can of Seafoam thru it and see what happens

I haven't checked the plugs just yet. Before and directly after the plugs were changed, I was hearing the noise.

I ran the Seafoam through the car two weeks ago. I just poured it into the gas tank.

The fact that you only hear it while driving makes me think its something mechanical? do you get any noise if you slowly rev it in neutral or park?

No sound while in park/neutral. Only when I'm rolling along.

Then i would say its something mechanical and not with the motor. Maybe a axle or trans?

I honestly don't think it's the tranny. It was making the noise before I had the tranny replaced, and it's still doing it. I'm thinking maybe the valves or possibly the p.s. pump.

I'm not 100% sure how to run the seafoam through the manifold vac. line....that's why I didn't do it.

I think you're right...There goes half of my weekend. Thanks, man.

Car running, pull vacuum line off (so that its still connected to the motor) and insert into can of sea foam.

While its possible that its your valves, the fact that it only does it while driving leads me to believe its not

Great! Thanks for the Seafoam tip.

Yeah...I guess you're right. It honestly sounds like a bearing rattling/tumbling around.

i have 00 tl with 93k miles, and i hvae the smae thing, but when im in park and accelrate very slowly, it does it too, nad it sounds like its coming from the tension pully, and when you put it is drive when the pully is worm, and keep your leg on the brake, and give it some gass to like 1k rpm, and you can hear that its totally coming from the pully, i think in your situation its the pully too.

This is the time everyone should run out and buy a stethascope, or next time you are at Harbor Freight Tools.

Diagnosing bearing noises and valve rattles becomes a breeze

You can buy mechanics stethascopes with a long metal extension and pointed probe tip for 3 bucks or a little more at most auto parts stores

Does anyone have the exact part # for the tension pulley? I've been looking on www.acuraoemparts.com and I can't seem to find exactly what I need. I think this is what's causing my mystery sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, bro. Would everyone agree that this is the part that I'm looking for? Just want to make sure I don't order the wrong part.

Finally tracked down that noise eh!

The safest thing to do since its still a try and see situation:
Kragen or other major auto parts store will let you return item of not
the fix you needed
Sometimes its easier to replace the whole tension than swap the pulley out

Yeah, I THINK that's the problem. At least I hope so.

You may be right about replacing the whole thing.

Opinions/comments???
