Transmission tips?

hey guys, i searched around for about three hours looking for answsers. my 99 has about 140,000 on the OD, and i am pretty sure im still on the factory tranny. i can tell its going to take a crap soon, and want to try to upgrade/repair a few things to hopefully stretch the life out. it does slip about 400-600 rpm between 1st and 2nd, then barely between 3rd and 4th. also, my first gear drags out alot b4 slipping. i want to drain and fill with z1 or amsoil syn. after reading, i noticed that there isnt enough oil going to the stack of "pressure plates" between gears, and cause them to fail. will replacing the pump/injector help out. any other reccomendations? just curious, are there any successful shift-kits for these cars?

also, ive seen different numbers everywhere for the warrany. 109k, 150k,... what is the mileage for the warranty?keep in mind, im am very limited on cash, so im trying to basically stretch the life out of the tranny for another 30,000 miles atleast. thanks

The extended warranty on the transmission is 109,000 miles or 7 years 9 months, whichever occurs first. Your 1999 TL reached the 7 year 9 month limit long ago. But you might be able to get some goodwill coverage from Acura. Read the Tranny Failure Thread for details on that:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-problems-fixes-117/tranny-failure-thread-566833/

Since your transmission is already showing signs of failing, you might want to hold off on the fluid drain and refill. It seems as if a drain and fill can sometimes accelerate a failing transmission.

Try to drain and refill, and clean the screen filter #9 on the solenoid for 99. Having the screen filter clean is critical. When your tranny shows symptom as you explain, with the history from this forum, you have two problems: either your tranny is going bad or your tranny is lacking of fluid flow. Your only option is to refresh the fluid and make sure the screen filter is not blocking the fluid flow.

If new fluid will cause the tranny to fail sooner, then the old fluid wont hold it any longer anyway since it is showing signs of problem. It is definitely worth the try comparing the cost of 3 quarts of fluid and 3k of tranny repair.

That seems like solid advice. I think I was thinking about failures that occurred soon after a transmission flush, which is not recommended for these transmissions.

Shift interlock relay position

I'm new to Acurazine so I can't post a new thread.

We're looking for the Shift lock relay position on an 03 TL3.2.

AllData indicates it's located under the hood in a relay box with 3 other relays. But the position indicated that it's suppose to be in never had any terminals.

Does anybody know where we could find the relay?

Dan

Hey guys I'm new here. I'm planning on picking up a 03 TL-S this week (recent flooding killed my daily driver).

Should this filter also be cleaned on the 03 models?

I'm pretty worried right now about getting this car since I read all the reviews. The car I'm looking at had a transmission replacement already. I have tried searching around, but I'm guessing Acura never did fully fix this problem (by fix I mean, fix the transmission, not just keep replacing them)? So even though I have a new transmission it will most likely fail again?

When was the transmission installed? Acura made some design improvements in Februaryof 2005 that may have substantially improved the reliability. So if the TL has a post Feb 2005 transmission, it may be more reliable.

But read the last twenty or so pages of the Tranny Failure Thread to get up to speed on the situation.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a 2nd Gen TL unless the transmission was under warranty or I could afford a transmission replacement.

I'm almost 100% sure the tranny was replace after then. In fact it was probally replaced in the past year or two (I will have to check with the owner, they have all the paperwork).

I'm going to take the car to acura first thing to make sure the oil jet kit was installed on the transmission. The car has 95k miles (Tranny was replaced ~75k miles) on it so the tranny should still be under warranty until 109k miles correct? When I test drove the car it was very smooth, no hints of it begining to fail.

I'll finish up reading that thread tonight. I pretty much did reading all over the internet about the problem. I just wish Honda would release the actual failure percentage of the 'redesigned' transmissions.
