Transmission Fluid

Searched...and found nothing.

Is it bad for the tranny if you change your tranny fluid after a long time like 75,000 miles. Does the tranny fluid flushing mess with an auto transmission due to parts of metal entering the fluid and messing with the tranny. Enlighten me.

do a single drain fill. Don't flush, Honda recommends Against flushes.

we do a simple procedure- its even in the owner book
drain out the approx 3 quarts of trans fluid the trans will give up at one time.
refill it- done. Thats the acura method for normal service

The trans holds more than twice that amount- so you can also do it 3 qts 3 times to remove all the old fluid-
drain and refill, drive 5 minutes, using each gear,-that pushes the old fluid toward the drain, drain and refill- do it again and you are done. thats referred to as 3x3 in the threads here

Use only honda ZR1 trans fluid, the book says if you use Dextron3, (thats what most cars use) `in an emergency` fill, you MUST do the 3x3 method to fully remove it!

honda dealer or import parts store has best price on ZR-1 fluid- 7-9$ per quart
Its easier than an oil change, no filter!

to be safe at 70- do a single drain and refill and you should be fine.

What do you mean by "to be safe at 70?" Are you saying that higher mileage cars shouldn't do the 3x3 method?

some members that waited until over 60-70k miles, maybe 100kmiles, and then did a full 3x3 ended up with trans failure soon after
At that point there is a lot of sludge, and clutch disc wear, the dirt seems to be holding it together and when removed- you get clutch slip= trans failure
Thats a generalization of what happens but you get the idea
With just the standard 3 qts and done- its a partial dilution but should be ok

as for the `filter` on the parts page- thats not normally replaced on a fluid change, I believe some ziners with shifting problems are removing and cleaning that filter with good results
For the normal service only the fluid is drained and refilled 1 time

Most trans have a trans pan and an internal filter, the TL doesnt.

I understand that but it was stated that there is no filter.

BTW, is it difficult to remove & service?

It was clear the context was user serviceable filter. The TL doesn't have one.

it won't hurt your trans to do a 3x drain and fill

1. drain and fill
2. drive about 10 miles
3. drain and fill
4. drive anothe 10 miles
5. drain and fill one last time

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that filter only for the oil going to the differential?

(#9 in the pix)

you dont want to drive 10 miles- all you need is 5 minutes on local streets, and during that drive you MUST manually shift thru each gear- including park, reverse, and nuetral- plus the drive gears
As you do that- fluid is pushed forward thru the system, out of the torque convertor where most of it lives, and to the drain

Longer drive mixes the fluid new with old-while the intent is to drain and replace it!

Higher miles car sometimes encounter problems after a full 3x3 as their first ever trans service
If you do it every 30k miles- that would be good, but wait till 70k miles or more,,, and you are safer just doing 3

and yes I was referrring to a normal service not needing a filter- none of us change that part out with a trans service, and I never heard of it being done at the dealer on a regular trans service either

You are welcome to change yours- and let the rest of us know if it improves shifting and the work required to reach it
I might learn something new!! (dont tell my wife)
