Tranny Skipping 3rd

Well, I bought the car for a song but shortly after I purchased it, I find out that the freakin guy that sold it to me neglected to say it was a R title! No wonder I got it for a good price. Found this out when the title was sent back to me form the PA DMV. Well to make a long story short, I gave it to my son for college and he called me the other night freaking out, telling me that something is wrong with the car. Tells me that the D5 light is blinking, it goes into neutral, the TCS light as well as the CEL light is on... My head is pounding at this point and all I can see is $$. Well the next day I called Cottman transmission and had them tow it in to see what the heck is up. I knew that the R title voided my warranty and that all expense will have to be covered by me. So far, it throwing two error codes; P1739 and P0780. Cost of taking out the tranny, opening it and seeing what is wrong, replacing what's broken and re-installing it is $598.00. So basically I still have to pay for parts. Hopefully it won't be a lot in parts... Needless to say this is going to be an expensive christmas!

What I would love to give to find that A$$ that sold me the car. NY titles don't really brand them like they do in PA.

dangeris, sorry to inform you that your son's car just developed the infamous 2nd gen. tranny problem. Go and read the tranny problem threads for more information.

Yeah I know all about it. I have an 03 TLS and I was able to get the tranny replaced on that...free of charge. However, because this was an R title vehicle, Acura will not honor the warranty. Kinda sucks!

You didnt think they car was hot or salvage title when bought on the cheap...the seller was just an idiot?

that 500 is going to be $2000-2500 by the time they get done and do a decent job of it.

No Actually I didn't. I bought it off a kid who was going to school in Utica and his story was that he needed to sell the car so he can pay his next years tuition. I'm hoping it's not going to cost that much!

Yeah, Thanks! Hind sight is 20/20.

Anyway, The shop got back to me about the cost of the tranny last Monday. It seems that Acura made a tranny for the 1999, then changed the design for 2000, then changed it again for 2001. But they kept that design till 2003.

So this is what failed, the torque converter, all of 3rd gear and 3 sensors. The mechanic said when the torque converter failed, it scattered debris from the TC to the rest of the tranny. by the time the sensors knew what happened, it was too late. There were some parts they had to buy form Acura such as the rebuild kit, and the sensors but the other stuff he was able to get from other part places.

Total cost of repair $2860.49 1600 for parts, $1100 for labor, the rest is tax.
And Christmas is right around the corner! That's it!, Everyone on my Christmas list is getting rocks!
