Tranny seems like it's in "N" When I punch it and it down shifts??

I bought this car (146,000) this weekend. This doesn't happen all the time and I can't make it happen. But I've noticed it when entering a highway. When I'm all ready going about 30mph and then I floor it and it down shifts. Well it sounds like it down shifts the RPMS jump up but no go. When I let off it will catch the gear then I can go (I don't floor it then to see if it jumps back down to that gear. Just to scared of messing it up more than it may be already)

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

somebody sold you a car with a soon dieing trans
thats clutch pack slippage when you get on it and it revs up - wont engage the gears properly
most appearent in 2nd and 3rd gear upshifts, our well known weak point inside the trans

start looking for a trans repair shop @ $2500 to rebuild yours
or a used trans from a crashed oddessey or accord is a popular option- see thread on it

stop by a parts store and ask for a code reading - its free
if any come back about torque convertor...guess what

what year car? 00+? watch the dash lights when you are having the problem
If the D5 light flashes thats more confirmation

in the meantime use easy throttle
If its acting up - try the left side of shifter system- SS mode allows you control of shifts (without using the regular gate shifter)
it operates on a higher line pressure and may force the shift

you can drain a little atf via a square headed cutout in atf bolt- it fits a 3/8 drive ratchet square
ck for material and brown or black fluid

Thank for the great info. Kinda what I was thinking but didn't want to admit it. The D5 doesn't blink or nothing. I noticed the color of the fluid wasn't black but more like faint red tinted. What about using lucas tranny non slip stuff? In other gears driving like a normal person it works great not slippage smooth shifts etc.,etc.,

thanks for the quick reply

right
like I said our 2nd and 3rd gear clutches wear out early
therefore the shifts into those gears is sketchy as they try to get some grip

the D5 light is usually near the end few months and happens getting on the freeway exactly how you described-- light momentarilly comes on then gone

25-35 mph and stand on it- revvvvv, let off, gains traction/friction and powers thru to the next shift point and same thing happens, then fine for cruise
Thats acuras method of testing the clutches--repeated numerous times at 25 and 35 mph-(varies with year/model) easy throttle- D5 and stand on it- it grips and goes or it revs and blows (not literally- but it will slip)

the fluid is reddish- thats good! not black or burnt sugar smell yet? good!

you are on your own with lucas in the TL trans, its been done,, but its not right for the trans = you may get 100 miles and...blam from overpressure

someone recently did a full change of atf and cleaned selenoids with similar symptoms- got 150 miles,,for about the same dollars,,trans dead

They said any where from $1900-2400
If I take off from a stand still it doesn't do it just when it has to down shift
Weird

Your trans is dying. You can try to clean the solenoids and change the fluid but it will probably be just a temp bandaid as the damage has apparently already happened

the clutches are working triple hard to handle the load on a full throttle downshift at low speeds

as the friction material wears off the plates- the abilty to engage and shift becomes less and less

be sure to look at the timing belt cover bolts- any signs its ever been off?
that was due at 105,,bad trans and that overdue would prompt a lot of people to sell the car quick

I've had this same problem with my trans since I bought my car from my uncle back in December... Also when i'm at highway speeds(50mpg and up) for about a minute straight, the TCS light will come on also. But once I shut off the car and turn it back on, it goes away. I'm pretty sure it has to do something with my transmission since I am getting a code P0741.

weird, i get this but only when cruising at about ~5mph on a cold start. so if i'm coasting to a stop sign & slow down to roll through it...i hit the gas at the right amount or more, it misses the shift. if i warm the car up for several minutes before moving, it rarely does this. really need to drain a tad bit of the trans fluid to check it soon

I have noticed this on mine to I haven't had it happen on mine if it's warm it's always been cold. (I know your not supposed to do it) It's still only happened twice and both times it was cold. I haven't tried to replicate it though since everyone is telling me its a weak tranny

You don't need to try to replicate the clutch slipping. It's gonna get worse, and the occurrences will become more frequent. Eventually the 3rd gear will be completely gone.

This was my experience.

tried coming to a complete STOP at STOP SIGNS??
count one, look left
two- look right
three-look left again and go!

that will let the trans shift into 1st and be ready for your throttle input

Oh I know. That's why I haven't tried it anymore LOL. It's not going to get better. I just wanted to see if it was more of an electronic shifting type of problem or clutch slippage.

Going from a stand still taking off going through the gears would be just as hard on the tranny as it down shifting I would think

downshifts at high rpms cause major wear right where you cant afford it
Something has to absorb the differenaces in speeds and torque

That makes since. with that you would think it would do that every single time but once the car is warmed up and Ive been driving it awhile. It will not slip it shifts hard and firm. It's just when its kinda cold. And its only in first gear.

1 to 2 shift it has a prob especially when cold
Try letting it warm up 1-2 minutes, no more needed- then drive away
that allows fluid temp to come up and rpm to go down, helps it to shift

cold and rpm increase line pressure, not what you want in this situation

It supposed to shift like buttaaah, smooth,
not hard shift into gear,,THATS ANOTHER DEATH WARNING..

If it ever stops shifting after 30 minutes drive- stop and let it cool 15-30 minutes-
the crud clogging the tc outlet screens will fall back off and allow trans operation for short time,,until force throws crud into the screens and pressure drops...

Wont hurt to do a drain and refill,,get 4 qts at honda- it drains 3 to 3.4,,measure whats removed
use Honda DW1 atf

If it slips when you get on the gas, its history for the clutches
