any dash warning lights?
Smell the aft on dipstick, dark color fluid and burnt sugar smell = trans toast
what you describe is textbook clutch pack wearout- which clogs the torque convertor outlet flow screens = no fluid power to make shifts happen
Let it rest and the stuff clears off the screens- you get good trans for x minutes until it clogs again,,,
at least you learned how to get it off the busy road if needed!
while its possible the pcm went nuts--thats more like Service Writer bs- because some gen2 VINs get a new PCM with trans, that cost extra now that warranty is expired
they cannot diagnose over the phone, the phone persons job is to get the car inside the shop... where you are at their mercy
quoted you full retail too- how nice of them!
local shops will charge about 2500 for the job, rebuilding in your case
plese see the last pages of `tranny failure thread` on main gen2 pages
does your family have any brand/dealer loyalty with your local dealer?- past car purchases- extensive use of service dept?
any reason to give you a few thousand dollar break on replacement trans??
How long have YOU had the car? is this recent to you --as a first or 2nd car you have owned?

its got 118k i got it with 104k oils changed 4times had timing driving belts redone thts the only major work iv had done im the 2nd owner its my 1st car 1st owner had all paper work.oi got a quote for a new tranny from a friends dad for 2500
oils changed 4 times--what does that mean,,atf changed 4 times since you owned it
or record of fluid change in past
or engine oil changes,,in which case see 7500 miles between changes threads-
2500 for what exactly- overhaul yours or a junkyard unit rebuilt or a used unit direct from crashed car?
definetly needs new/rebuilt torque convertor as yours is loaded with clutch particulate matter

my transmission is going bye bye soon too. i feel like i hardly knew it.
regardless, are there any alternatives to getting a trans-rebuild? Like maybe fitting a different transmission from a different J- motor, or is that too expensive to be considered practical?
