Tranny Failure Thread

[QUOTE=JR_NoVA]
What disturbs me most is why acura/honda apparently hasn't yet come up with a rebuilt transmission that overcomes the problems so that when they replace them after a failure that acura owners will be the happy customers that we should be!
I bet it comes down to a cost/benefit analysis and they have determined that its not worth it for them to "fix" the problem, and instead its cheaper, probably much cheaper, for them to keep putting the same old crappy transmission in again and again. In a few years the problem will slowly go away.
I agree with you JrNova. I guess it's like with most large corporations philosophy of not doing what is right, just what costs less. You would think it is hard to believe it is cheaper for them to keep throwing trannys in that they know will fail at some point, but I'm sure they have analyzed the costs of engineering and re-designing the tranny to make it reliable and the scales tip to just keeping the faulty design going and like you say the problem will slowly go away as the cars get older and out of warranty. I guees the strong Honda reputation does not matter. Engineering costs a lot of $$, but you would have thought that they would have redesigned the trannys for the new '04 TLs and just carried it over for the replacements on the earlier models. But, as we have seen, there are issues with those as well

we love em - we continue to buy em
It's a shame loyal owners have to endure this re-occurring problem.
I've got a 00tlp @50k.
If the tranny was made as reliable at the rest of the car, I'd hold it forever.
As it is, I'll probably trade it some day for a more reliable ride. And because I like the TL, I'm looking at the 05/06. I'm still looking to find a comp car with ride, handling, features at the same price. If it's there please point me to it.
Its seems like the tranny warranty extension is there so we are placated until we decide to trade in/up.

I Suppose It Was Inevitable....
my '03 TL-S is at the dealer right now awaiting the arrival of its new transmission. The car has 38,000 miles on it. My rotors are also warped...again. I had them turned at 19,000 miles and had new "softer" pads installed. This was all done under warranty. This time around I am going to replace the rotors with cross drilled Brembos and ceramic pads. This will definitely be my last Acura.

Third Tranny
My tranny just went out. It is my third. 1st at 33000 2nd at 72300 and I am at 79600. So the last one lasted just over 6k miles. That is just not acceptable. I do not drive very aggresively or spirited. My wife has been driving it for the past few months.
I am going to dump the car before the extended warranty runs out. Has any heard of Acura offering another extension at some cost?
This is actually my 2nd TL-S. My first caught fire at the dealership when the shift lock release fuse blew. I should have sense the cursed car then.
What is wrong with Acura/Honda?

Well, our two-week old 2002 TL-P (which is for sale) just had a transmission go out.. about 155 miles away from home (Atlanta) near the Florida border, with a towing bill of $400 that I just had to pay. I certainly hope Acura will reimburse, and provide a loaner ASAP, as I just sold our only other car thursday, and was in FL test driving (though the seller had lied; it needed lots of work) a replacement 3-series, so right now, we're 2 cars short, and relying on my dad's old Chevy S10 pickup truck.. The TL is at Baranco Acura (well, next door..they had the gate out front shut, so there was nowhere else to tow it), we'll see how they treat the situation..

Just had the 2nd tranny replacement (3rd tranny total) in my 2003 Type S. Only having the car for about 18 months and the first one went out at 36K. Just over two years since I bought her, and had second replacement at 46K last week.
Having to deal with the replacements is a pain in the rear. Thinking about trading for the 2005 soon, but damn I love my car!

Engine/transmission mounts
I just had my tranmission replaced at 67K, and was told that my front and lower engine and transmission mounts were broken. Aren't these most likely broken from the violent banging between gears from my defective transmission, and shouldn't this therefore be covered by acura?

On Friday, I was doing 60MPH, and was going to pass a car when i hit the gas..the trans. slipped and my RPM jumped to 7000. This happened twice more.
My "Check Engine" and VSA Exclamation Point light came on about 10 minutes later.
I dropped the car off at the dealer at 7:30am, they gave me a loaner immediately, and i got the call 2hours later.
It's shot, and will be replaced. I have 62K miles on the car...I asked the dealer and he said it's a new transmission not rebuilt and not an older version. I'm a IT guy..so i asked him in computer terms..i asked him if i was getting Acura Tranny v. 1.0 w/ Service Pack 2 on it..or was i getting Acura Tranny v. 2.0...
He said it's brand new that is the version going in cars now....I don't know what my warranty is going to be..I bought the extended when i got the car because i was worried about something going wrong w/ the Navigation...
We'll see how it goes...

Tranny Issues @ 158k
I've read all of the forum issues about tranny problems. My '00 TL had tranny replaced by the dealer @ 95K free of charge. I know they went through 2 trannys trying to get one to fit properly and they had the car for 2 weeks. A rental Camry was provided through Enterprise at no cost after I bitched about the Escort that they tried to give me originally. Fast forward to today. Oil jet was replaced at 150K. I noticed drops of fluid on the driveway and the oil change place tells me there is tranny fluid all over the top of the tranny. I suspected it was a problem as a result of the oil jet kit installation, Drop the car off at Acura this morning, they give me an '05 TL as a loaner. They tell me tranny is leaking from a seal and that they will replace the tranny at no charge as a warranty replacement. Now I can't speak for anyone else but I've had nothing but excellent service from the dealer and Acura in getting this tranny problem fixed. I've got a car with 158,000 miles on it and Acura is still taking care of tranny problems at no charge to me. Yes its a PITA but what other manufacturer is still hanging in there with you at 50,000+ much less more than 3 times that amount of mileage. My TL adds 125+ miles on its odometer every day and I'll buy again in spite of the tranny problems because of the way Acura and AHS have stood behind this car.

I have had the same experience with my dealer. But y should we have to go through this numerous times???? I feel that this such an inconvience to us. Most of us purchased Acura because of Hondas great reliability reputation. This car has not lived up to the standards of the Honda/Acura reputation. I'm on my 4th tranny and I looking at it going up again in 20-40k as the others did. Honda has lost some of it's credibility with this model. IMO

2000 TL-P with 63k miles here. I just went in to the Acura dealer today and had my oil jet kit installed. I asked them about the tranny warranty and was joking around saying it better not fail within the warranty period (7 years or 100k miles). Well then the service advisor gave me a look and said, "No, the tranny is covered for 7 years or 150k miles". I'm like and said he was pretty sure. I told him that the acura owner link page displayed the warranty information and said it was only for 7 years or 100k miles, whichever comes first. Did anyone else hear about this? I'm thinking he got mixed up somehow...

I just brought my car in to the local Acura dealer last night. The usual symptoms as everyone else has posted in this thread. I had even had them perform the jet-kit installation just 2 months ago. What a waste ...
Does anyone know if the reman tranny they will put in has been updated in design ?? I thought I have read they just use the case, but the internals are all to new spec design. I have also heard the power is reduced due to new program in the PCM. Can anyone else confirm this ?
I did get a GMC Envoy for my rental week. Look out speedbumps, here I come

That said, wouldn't it be deceptive advertising if the hp was lowered. *points to the Ford Cobra debacle and Mazda Miata*

Interesting "explanation" of the transmission failures
Don't know the accuracy...
"That said, let me formally introduce you to Honda's AT's. They are hydraulically actuated manual transmissions!"

I just had my 3rd Tranny replacement. The 2nd was in Oct 04 and only 6k miles ago.
I was told that Honda/Acura lastest tranny was out by then.
How many of you have had a tranny replaced after the middle of 04 and if anyone had that one fail too? thanks

Are Tranny's Really like that?
I've just brought my 02TL w/70k miles and from what i've been reading here, trannys are the biggest problem.
I dont think i have a warranty, but is there a way i can get an extended warranty to put on my vehicle?
I really don't see myself spending another $3k or so for something like this.
PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!!

You obviously have not read any of the other messages in this thread. If you had, you would know that trannys are covered for 7 yrs and 100,000 miles. You would also know this if you had registered your car at acura.com.

I hope you got a very good deal on the car. I have had two friends also buy TLSs right after me and have not had any problems, but both have far less miles than me.

The dealer was great. Will have me back on the road probably on Monday. No cost and they got me a 05 Cady DeVille free of charge until my TL is back on the road.

Broken Tranny
Hello everyone,
been reading through the threads and am wondering, will the new tranny be better then the old one? is it one that they fixed the problem on or will this be an ongoing thing?? i some on here have been through a couple of trannys so i guess the answer is no? i dont want to be going through this again every year or so... my 2001 tl has 47k on it. Dealer said they will order a new tranny from California, just wondering if its the same crappy on thats on it now...
the worst part is i traded my 1999 dodge intrepid with over 100k on it with zero probs for this car... the wife keeps reminding me of that...

New to acura tl - tranny questions
I just bought my 2000 acura tl used with 88k miles. It is in great condition, very clean with only some minor scratches, got it super super cheap. I took it to the dealer first thing after I found out about the tranny recall. They looked it over and said everything is fine and installed the oil jet.
Has anyone had the failure after the oil jet?
Also, has anyone related the tranny failure to using the sport shift?
The car was previously owned by a woman and has mostly highway miles, so I doubt the SS was used much( no offense to women, but they are generally not as aggressive drivers). I am wondering if i should stay away from using the SS to prevent damage and make the tranny last, or should beat the sh_t out of it and get a new one before 100k warranty is up..
For those who have had tranny failures please let us know how much you have used the sport shift.
