Yea I'm really 20 but I went there with my dad because I knew that by law they couldn't give me a loaner since I'm under 21, but somebody told me that if I go with my dad, they'll give it to him.

I'm 90% sure that the tech only test drove it and did NOT check any codes.

However, my car has many other symptoms that indicate that the tranny is close to its end. It takes about 2-3 seconds to engage in gear when shifting from R to D. It also rolls back when shifting from R to D. When using SS mode, there is ALWAYS a jerk when shifting gears. Car also feels very sluggish when accelerating, and I'm pretty sure its the tranny's fault.

This dealer is actually located about 30 miles away from me, so its not like I could go there every day till they could finally replicate the symptoms I told them about. I'm gonna give it a little more time until it becomes alot more obvious to them that the tranny is going bad.

But I have a question though, there was a group buy for Innovative Mounts, and if I buy those and just bring them to the dealer and tell them I'll pay them for the labor to replace the mounts while the tranny's out, will they agree to replace the mounts with a non-oem part?

If you can get the symptoms to show whenever you want, ask to take their tech for a ride so you can show him what you are experiencing. Make all of those symptoms happen while you're riding around with him.

buy OE mounts or they will try to blame that! Have a private shop install them soon or call a buddy who knows cars for help

Write a list of problems in detail for the tech to see-
You cannot legally drive the rental/loaner car even if in dads name- big problem, and they probably suspected that was the case.
Sometimes you just have to leave your car with them, and ask the service manager to drive it home and to lunch until it acts up.
Going for a drive withthe tech is best- with you driving and then driving if needed

Have you smelled the fluid- is it burned?
Read back a few pages of this thread for things to avoid if you are looking to preserve the trans for a long time.
Then if the lights are flashin- the trans is a crashin! drop it off at the dealer again, they pay for a tow if needed

My acura has 80k on it but is 8 years old. Would I still qualify for the 100k/ 7years warranty? Specifically, is it 100k or 7 years, whichever comes first or whichever comes last?

its 7 years plus 9 months from first date in service or 109k miles

Acura can tell you that date. 1-800-382-2238 x5 need you VIN
IN addition they have "goodwill policy"if you just go in and be nice
There has to be an observable problem- not just- you want a free transmission under warranty!

tranny time!

OK, the dealer agreed to replace the trans on my 03 type s (58k). I only felt a slight shudder in the 2-3, but it was enought to signal trouble. Are the new trannys improved or can I just expect another 50k out of it?

Thats a warning sign, my replacement unit from nov 2006 is doing that too, has been for a while just waiting to get bad.
If you get a good one- it should last 70-100k miles - we hope
It does have its own warranty plus the original 7/109 still covers you as well

If they call and say needs front motor mount- $150, get it done, very common and not warranty in most cases

I have an 03 type s at about 57K. a few weeks ago my CEL and VSA lights came on when i put the car in gear and the car drove like VSA was engaged. It sat for a few days then it was fine. then yesteday, its delayed shifting to reverse and thumped and the 2-3 shift was at times not very pleasant, at light and heavy throttle. its didnt consistently do it, but i dont want to get stuck. Im outside the Vin range, but i have CPO and Acura care. The car is stock except resonator removed on intake and spring shocks and sways. do you guys think there will be an issue with the dealer?

tranny update

Got the car back and running fine. The dealer did replace the motor mount and it was covered under my extended warranty. I did not notice How harsh the shifts were until I had the new one installed. thats what I get for driving manuals all my life.

I tried what you said about crusing at light throttle at ~25 - 35 mph in D5, the first time I did it, I literly stood on the gas pedal like you said, I heard the engine rev for like a second and I was NOT ganing speed during this time, after that my rpm's went all the way upto 7k and I'm pretty sure they hit redline, and then it finally shifted with a slight jerk.

The second time I did it, I was going ~ 30 mph, and floored it again, and this time the engine rev'd again for a split second, and then as I was gaining speed, the rpm's were going up, and it finally shifted around 6,500 rpm, also with a slight jerk.

When I shift from N to D5 what am I supposed to feel? Am I supposed to give it light throttle when in N and then throw it down to D5?

NOOOO!!!
No nuetral drops- what are you thinking anyway- I never said to do that!!!!

Those were just basic test for you to see if it felt like there was slipping of the clutches as it downshifts and accellerates- did it feel good or like a weak system
Full throttle shifts are a little rougher than regular driving- no need to go to redline on those basic test

When you normally shift from park to drive- you go thru nuetral then into drive-with your foot on the brake right?
So starting at nuetral, so you can pay attention,- while stopped at idle speed, put in D5, does it go into gear immedialty and want to start the car moving?-
or feel like 2 thunks that take 2-3 or 4 seconds before complete and its really in Drive

look I really appreciate your help and all, but I cant believe I gotta go through all this crap just to diagnose a broken tranny that Honda/Acura KNOW is broken.

I'm gonna try a few more things like you said, but if I "accidently" brake the tranny with these "nuetral drops", then fuck it cause I'd rather have it happen now and not when I'm going on a trip somewhere important.

I can't belive that Acura KNOWS their shit is broken and actually waits for it to brake to replace it instead of making it a recall and replacing it on all 1999-2003 models

NOT ALL the cars are affected, in the USA as a whole, maybe 25 percent of all TL/CLs have the prob.
If you have symptoms you get a replacement trans.
If yours are intermittant- leave it with the dealer with request that manager drive it home and to lunch until it acts up.
Are you planning a long trip soon? If it breaks down anywhere- you call acura and they send a flatbed truck
At age 20 dont expect a loaner car-insurance rules- even if you take dad in- they know whats up and its their liabilty!

just want to let everyone know they arent alone.

this is happening to a bunch of accord owners as well, to the NEW ones. (2003+)
http://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/A.../transmission/

im wondering how the 04+ TLs transmissions are holding up. i dont think i will ever buy a honda/acura again. they are really slipping.

my friends 02 accord tranny went at 50k last year.

my other friend drives an 04 sedan and his tranny is starting to slip at 80k.

It's very common on the 98-02 I4 and V6s. On the 03+, it's only common on the V6. Even then, it's only a small handful.

Haven't checked in here in quite a while, so playing catchup on this thread. I got tired of reading the tranny threads every other day a few years back.

Noticed the delay shifting into drive and the 2-3 hesitation shift last week. Brought my car in and getting tranny goodwill'd. I'm outside the vin# range, have under 40K on the clock, original owner, car is close to pristine condition (currently on autopian disabled list).

They'll call me once they have the new tranny come in from Ohio. They said 3/36 warr, will go for roughly half the price of the tranny. Not sure if that's good or not as it seems to vary with the different posts here. Will see if I can negotiate that number (still reading thread). So far, I'm impressed with service and professionalism. I guess I'll see what happens when all is said and done.

Thanks for all the info and tips guys, it definitley helped me out heading in.

3/36 is the best they offer and that usually when you pay a large percentage of the bill.
If they have offered that, just write that thank you letter and say nothing else

So you're saying I should pay for the 3/36 ? What's a respectable price cap ? I'm seeing all various numbers in this thread. Is the 3/36 just for the tranny ?
TIA

When you have to pay partial cost of the trans replacement- it usually comes with a 3/36 warranty on the replaced trans itself- thats if you paid 1000-3000 for your share
You dont pay extra for it- its part of the deal IF you paid partial cost on the trans
Since they are GOODWILL replacing yours- I have never heard of them SELLING the 3/36 as part of that
You need to talk with a boss- not the service writer who is trying to make commission

freebie customers only get a 12/10 warranty on trans

01tl4tl,
Ok, I wrote it wrong. I was just looking at what comes out of pocket rather than where the money is going. If I get the 3/36 it is because I'm paying a portion of the replacement.
Thanks for clearing that up.

If they are good willing you the trans and offering you a 3/36 for a partial pay i may be inclined myself to pay part of and get the warranty just to play it safe. I wouldn't pay more than 1500 for it though. If they wont work with that then i would just take my chances. Have you called Acura Client Services?

I'm leaning towards laying out for the 3/36 for peace of mind. Just trying to see what a fair number is. I think I saw a few other posts with a lot more miles than mine and getting it for under 1500. I haven't called ACS yet.
Thanks man !

I wouldn't say that's right.

I just got my car back last week from a tranny replacement. I had 96,500 miles on my car. It was one day outside of my extended warrenty, but still within Acura's. They gave me a 3/36 beyond the 109,000 miles tranny warrenty. However that works.

It seems hit and miss, good and bad stories out there. It's reasonable to see that it's going to vary in different places of the country too. From my perspective, I see a few people here with 1st and 2nd trannys gone at higher mileage and paying labor costs and getting a 3/36. I could live with a few hunderd in just labor costs.

I finally took my car in because the trans was acting up. After they looked at it they said my trans was toast, and they also said they would be willing to "goodwill" a new trans if i pay for the warranty (3 yr/36k) which is 300 bucks. I figure its a pretty good deal since my vin is out of range. Its in the shop now atleast i get to drive around a 08 tsx with navi!

I have a 99 TL. My car shifts hard sometimes from 1st to 2nd, and my check engine light stays on. Then when I get up a about 30mph my TCS light comes on too. My car has 237k miles on it though. what would be the best way to go about handling the situation? and if the tanny needs to be replaced, wheres the best place to find one?

99 with a 4 speed that lasted this long- thats great!
Take it to AAmc---- and ask if they have done tiptronic transmission at that very shop with techs that work there now- have any needed a 2nd or 3rd attempt to get it right?

A used trans is no better than what you have now- one in need of rebuild
about 2500 give or take - rising materials cost etc

Oh I wish i was not posting on this Thread but I am. My tranny died last night, towed to the dealer, 48 hrs from end of ext warr so I am definately one with a large horseshoe you know where...

Looking for tips on what to expect - I am getting a loaner - I pick it up in two hrs, and they are going to warr for one yr on the newly rebuilt tranny. Should I be asking for other things, checking into other things, prior to this, the car ran like a dream.

All advise and feedback is well appreciated.

p.s. For some odd reason, my love for the TL-s has not diminished - I really thought I would be livid but am just feeling a tad inconvienienced - maybe by the 2nd or 3rd time I may be of different spirits.

Whats up, I am pretty new here. Sorry for this cuz i am pretty sure someone mentioned it already somehwere but i just didnt feel like reading 38 pages worth of posts. I have an 01 TL w/ 65,XXX and an original tranny. I am starting to notice rougher shifting and a rare once in a while hesitation to go from Reverse to Drive.

I called the dealer and they explained that my 7/100 warranty just expired(Past 7 Years) and the extended transmission warranty is expired, so the best they could do was compensate me for half of the bill. My question is, is there anything i can do to make them compensate me for the whole thing? Yes paying half is better than paying the whole bill, but since its manufacturer failure and it is a very common problem i think the dealer can do much better than compensate me for only half of the bill even tho my warranties are expired. Thanks all.

you spoke with a service advisor/writer - not the Service MANAGER
They dont know everything, like the FACT that the court extended the 7/100 that they made acura give us, then added and made it 7years PLUS 9 months from first date of service OR 109k miles whichever happens first-
it has also been successfully argued that the same court ordered that our odometer reads 5% fast - so 109 actual miles would be 104.5 indicated miles
One service writer tried to say the 5% was the extra 9k miles,
when asked to show the math required to make 100+5% = 109??? the trans was replaced

Well, chalk me up for another one, this will be #5, the last one was at 90,000 now im at 130k, i love this car but this is ridiculous, 5 transmissions, by friend has gone through 4 in his cl-s, i barely made it home, i turn to leave school and the car would not shift from 1st as i was taking a right with traffic coming my way, that was scary and lame, it shifted in to 2nd and it stayed in 2nd and limped back home the back way.... i don't know if ill have to get it towed in, but that was a great way to end finals week :P
