so im new to the TL and am now reading about all the tranny problems 99-03 had, any precautions i could take? car has around 90 on it right now, acura offer any recall type deals? a blown tranny could would be a kick in the sack, and the wallet
Hey man, so i thought it would be good to post as i havent driven my car normally for over a month now because of tranny problems. I dont really know what to say in terms of precautions. My car was driving perfectly until i got my transmission flushed at 63K. After that my differential bearing went. Now i am not sure whats going on but im getting a new transmission sooo....this post was no help but thought i would let you know my story.

i don't think there is any precautions you can take. the transmission can just blow any minute.
my car was running fine at 55K miles....next thing you know, my engine light and VSA light comes on. a day later, the tranny blew! just check to see if you have extended 100K warranty. i would bring it in before the warranty expried just to have them check it out or replaced for free.

As for warranty register at acura.com for owners link. Enter in your vin and it will tell you if your covered. 99-03 have a 7 year 109k trans warranty (except for some 03s) Warranty follws the car, not the owner.
not to hijack this thread...but I notice when I am shifting from P to D it's a little thick(requires more effort to shift) <-- cold temp outside and the car is not fully warmed up yet
but once the car has been on for like 30 min or so and I attempt to shift from D back to P, it doesn't take much effort and feels a lot smoother...any ideas?

I would think it would be the car hasnt warmed up. as long as it isnt jerking into gears i think your fine.....however, i dont know very much about cars so hold me to zero of which i say. BTW so from researching and hearing from people the tranny in the type S is expensive as ass Dealer will be roughly almost 5g's Thats what clair of walpole here in MA said. used ones...usually run you 2g's for the tranny..and rebuilding it cost me 2200

The original transmission in my 1999 TL made it to 173,000 miles which isn't too bad for an automatic.

My 1999 TL already passed that point.
And the "we'll see what we can do" comment is promising. Even if they won't cover the entire replacement, they might cover part of it.
Good luck!

yea i outdated that one too, i was up in december, huge kick in the nuts...if i only knew about this recall earlier, fingers crossed i guess....car is driving fine, just randomly does the hard shift thing, o well maybe ill meet a rich old lady and inheret her 07 RL
Take it to the dealer and let a tech check it out. They dont replace them if nothing is wrong, but if yours does anything funny, like the items listed as official symptoms at www.acura.com which you can read after you register your car!!!!!
If something is wrong and you past warranty just a few months ago-
they may go FULL coverage or increments starting at 1000$ up to 3000, but those come with special extended warranty of 1 to 3 years because you helped pay
Even if the tech cant find problem now- and it fails later after warranty- they will hook you up because you made good faith effort earlier and they know it would fail eventually.
