Torque Converter Malfunction!

Hey, I was driving today going about 55-60 mph and the check engine light came on... went over Autozone to get my code read.. turns out to be the Code: P0740. In other words, there's a malfunction in the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Circuit. ... Is this a huge problem I should be worried about? I'm not sure if it's a problem in the wiring or the TCC solenoid itself... any ideas anyone?

I have to make the trip back up to RI for christmas break from FL, so would I be in trouble making the trip or should I avoid everything all together?

Did more searching.... read other posts... I don't understand, the car shifts fine and everything, and yet, everyone else that had the code ended up getting a new tranny

Well shit. Can't do much but start saving up I guess. This tranny so far only lasted me since August. wtf.

Question... Is it possible that an Acura dealership would install the 5spd (including all other necessary parts) and still warranty it?

That failure isnt teh normal failure we all have. Is there warranty left on it since its only a few months old?

^ The warranty just expired last week... Even worse, the place I got it from is 1,300+ miles away. Kinda sucks.

I was under the impression that the torque converter was not part of teh transmission replacement. Am I not correct on this?

It should be since it can house contaminants that could effect it. Most rebuilders that i talked to replace it while rebuilding them

If it was an Acura reman transmission, the torque converter was replaced with the transmission.

I just got around to checking my CEL since I just got my code scanner in today and have the P0740 now, I had the tranny replaced by Acura 9/2005 at 96,xxx and now have 135,xxx miles. The car seems to run perfect, but based on others experience, maybe it's just a matter of time. I was hoping to have this one last at least a few years or so. I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed.

When I threw that code, Acura replaced the tranny.

I don't think they'd replace mine since it's been 16 months since the last replacement and now I'm at 135,xxx miles. Aren't they only warranteed for 12 months/12,000 miles?

What if the newer, post 2/05 trannies now have torque converter problems?
fstttyms1, didn't you have a torque converter problem with the last tranny you had? And now we have a couple more?

After I cleared the code last night and went for a short drive, car was running a little funny. When I come to a stop/slow to almost a stop such as when coming to a stop sign or when parking, the car "shudders" at least a couple times. It doesn't really seem like it's going to stall, but feels like it could almost lead to that if it got worse.

Does anyone know if this code is electrical/solenoid related or more of a mechanical issue?

If I can get time this week I just might take it to the local Aamco that I trust and has done excellent work for me a few times in the past and have them do a free check on it to see what they say.

I don't think that has anything to do with the tranny. If you watch the tach, is it dipping below 750 RPMS?

the tach does dip, but after driving a little more yesterday, it seems like it isn't doing it now like it was. I probably drove 60 miles total and the P0740 code hasn't come back yet. One thing I did notice is that if I give it some gas and let off when driving at any speed, when the rpm's drop from letting of the gas, the tach bounces a little once or twice. I don't know if this was happening before I got the torque convertor code.

when i first got my car, the solenoid was bad but i didnt know it. drove it down the road and pissed me off a good bit. it didnt shutter or attempt to stall, but in between gears it did jump up about 2500RPM then yank into the next gear.. got that replaced and its been fine since, just a little damga to the convertor itself since i drove it a few miles without the solenoid working properly. no check engine light, shifts pretty good... hope this helps.
