Tl overheating at idle, fans not coming on while idling, replace fan switch?

This problem just came out of no where, my car was idling and the temp raised up real quick, i noticed the fans were not coming on when they normally would (temp gauge in middle) but when i turn the car off, the fan on the driver side runs for a while than shuts off. Both fans run with the AC on and its good heat blowing out of the vents, is this a simple sensor or relay problem? Thanks.

Pretty useless reply, i searched and couldnt get the answers i needed. Btw, i took the car on a 20 min highway ride and the temp gauge stayed right where it should be. But when its idling, neither fans kick on as they should, both still runs with the ac on. Im confused.

It would help if you tell us what year TL you have, Both fans should be on. Could be a faulty fan switch, or fuse.
I can provide the proper diagram to better help pin point the problem.

You only think it's useless because you want to be spoonfed the information rather than search threads where users had the same problems because that involves effort.

Definitely check the fan switch A, To check the circuit you can jump the contacts on the connector and verify the operation of both cooling fans. Thats a quick and easy test you can do with a small piece of wire.
If both run when jumped then you can assume the fan switch is bad but if they don't run then the problem is elsewhere in the circuit.
Disregard Fan switch C, It does not apply to 99

Thanks alot! Do you think it would be safe to drive with the ac on? Since both fans run with ac on.

If it does not overheat you should be ok but its risky.

Thanks man, i idled the car for 40 minutes with the ac on and the temp held held perfect, i than turned the ac off for about 5 mins and the fans still didnt kick on. So im guessing my temo gauge is raising because of the fan switch. Im just gonna replace all fan related relays, and i might go to the scrap yard and grab another fan switch while im at it. I believe the t stat and waterpump are working as they should, i have strong heat and the upper radiator hose gets hot. I hope its something simple. Forgot to metion, i think i hear the alternator whining, not too sure on that one though.

Start with the switch and nothing else, You may start other problems by throwing parts at it.
DId you try the test ? if so what where the results.

Havent tested the switch yet, i dont have a wire at the moment, but i do have a coat hanger. Would that work? And do i stick the wire in the sensor itself or the connector that goes to the car?

No do not use a coat hanger, If no wire then use a staple. don't damage the contacts. Yes that is the fan switch just jump the wires on the connector not the sensor.
All u need is to make contact on both wires and observe both cooling fans, they should both go on.

Alright i found only one wire, so i wired the main fan to the battery. It sucks having to keep popping the hood. Car is running great, im gonna have time 2mor morning to replace the switch and better diagnose the problem. I will post the results of the test when i do it. Thanks.

Be careful wiring direct like that its only for testing purposes, You may start a fire under the hood.
Its simpler to jump the connector I had mentioned before, much safer than that method.

Wow thanks for the info man, would have never thought about that. In a couple of hours im gonna go to the car and try to jump the connector and see what happens, if the fans comes on than i will replace switch. If all is well, i will jump the connector instead of the fan.

Well, i think i made a costly mistake, i was trying to jump the main fan relay with a wire instead of using the battery, when i had it hooked up to the relay, i accidently touched the other end of the wire against metal. And boom the fan stopped working. Im guessing i shorted the fan out, but the condensor fan still works.

Well i put another fan switch in and let the car idle for a few mins at operating temp and the fans still didnt kick in! I also noticed when i pulled the sensor out of the car in the scrap yard, the other end had coolant on it, mines was bone dry when i pulled it out! Dont know what that could mean. Damn what next, i jumped both fans and they both run. My abs and tcs light is on from when i hit that curb.

More than likely a fuse blew, look under the hood for the fuses associated with both fans and replace if necessary. Theres no way the fans are going to work correctly if you short it out.
After you fix that then you need to wait for the gauge to see if it goes up from the normal range, If it does then you have other issues.
Last time I will ask, Did you jump the fan switch connector and what was the result.

Yes a fuse blew, but i replaced it and both fans runs flawlessly! I believe they still dont come on on their own, and yes, i jumped a wire in both sides of the connector and the fans did not run. I havent tested fan switch b yet though. It appears that all relays are working as they should. Im stomped, but not giving up.

Ok so its not the fan switch, That leaves the fan control module however check both fuse #3 15A #6 7.5A drivers side under dash. If both are good then you need to get on to the fan control module and inspect it for burn marks. the control module is located next to the radio on the passenger side. Check the fuses first

about how long do you think the car shoyld idle before the fans kick on? I jumped the fan switch connector and both fans kick on, i replaced fan switch with another, idk if the fans run without ac yet. I had the car idling with heat on for about 20 mins yesterday and i didnt notice the fans kicking on, but car was at the right temp, i even drove for a while earlier with ac off and temp held perfect, but i wanna make sure fans are working before i drive worry free.
