I have changed my Tranny fluid every 10,000 miles since owning my car. Bought it with 38k on it when it was 6 years old. I have 143,000 on it now. Originally I changed it 2 times in one month. It's about $24 bucks for 3 Qt.s of fluid to do this = about $48 a year. My tranny still shifts smooth and nearly as well as when I bought the car. Cheap insurance I figure to try to ward off failure.

Also for anyone's information and this is the truth. When my battery was failing=the car was getting hard to start and wouldn't turn over and fire well, MY MILEAGE WENT DOWN TO AROUND 19 MPG instead of the usual 22/23 mostly city driving. SO? I have to agree that a bad battery WILL! affect mileage. It did on my car for sure!

with the high demand on the electrical -the alt and battery have to work together to power the system fully all the time. One gets weak and problems occur

in the old days things were different

winter places extra demands on the system, so a free test at your local parts store is well worth the few minutes to go there

I was out of a car for a couple of days. 3 days I think. But I didn't know the tranny fluid HAS to be changed every 20K. I assume I a can just used Honda ATF right? Is there a DIY on how to change the tranny oil here? I think I remember seeing one. Guess I'll do a search.

Then I'll just replace the front sensor then.

Believe it or not THIS IS THE FIRST time I've heard of "winter blend" gasoline until my friend, who's a GM mechanic in Delta Co told me tonight on the phone, then I read it here. I never experienced this before in the last couple of winters...only this winter. When did this take effect? is this winter blend mandated by the EPA? I live in BFE so maybe it's just getting to my area.

My buddy also told me, what a lot of people do in his area is they pour Lucas Gas Treatment in the tank (5oz to 25gal). Right away you will notice a difference in gas mileage per tank when you use that in the winter. But reading the reviews and different websites, a lot of folks say that it WILL NOT improve your gas mileage but rather clean your injectors and what not (same as seafoam). I'm thinking it's snake oil.

What are your guy's thoughts of adding octane boost with the "winter blend" premium gas? Will it counter the winter blend thereby making it a faux summer blend? I'm not saying I'm going to do this but just asking. I'm sure I'm not the only one on the upper east coast that has this idea. Thoughts?
Winter blends have been around for a very long time. And i wouldnt waste my money on additives. The money you spend in buying them will not be made up by mpg improvements.

I had no clue that a battery could play such a factor. I have been getting bad gas mileage ( 17 mpg ) on this half tank - stayed under 3000 rpm for the entire test.. Clean k/n air filter - new plugs - new synthetic oil - seafoam gas tank - seafoam intake - tire pressure good, 93 octane shell - have not done egr port cleaning yet 158k miles ...

I just recently put in a new battery, and now that 01tl mentioned " battery" - this may be the culprit.

Contacts are obviously clean and tight ! Should i remove the clock fuse and reset the ecu ??? It does start slower now with the new battery. Ground wire looks good... Anything else i'm overlooking ??

DUDE you have to stop smoking that crack shit piss poor suggestion and it has no bearing what so ever on fuel eccononmy, once the engine is started the cables and battery do NOTHING unless the ALTERNATOR GOES OUT.

The majority of the time someone has a fuel ecconomy issue it's because of their own right foot and the jack rabbit starts they perfrom, rarely does my car see over 3k on the tach.

rcb2000 - I totally agree ! But, if my driving habits/ conditions/ etc hasn't changed ( with the exception of the temperature and humidity) what am I missing ? I use to get 5 - 7 more mpg - just 4 weeks ago. With gas at 4.45 per gallon - it starts to add up quick when you drive 800 miles per week.

some of it can be that the fuel blend is different than what it was even though your buying gas at the same location ( most areas use one blend for months x, y and z and then another for months a, b, and c), other area's are tire pressure can have a hugh effect, using the AC can reduce MPG. summer temps can reduce effecncies too, typically you will see a decrease in MPG during the colder climit seasons.
