Sudden phantom braking?!

I'm in a 2000 3.2TL with 125,000 miles. Serviced regularly per manual. I was just on the freeway, doing about 60 mph getting up to speed, when suddenly the brakes slammed down and squealed a little, but I know my foot was nowhere close to them. Then it did it again a couple minutes later. Both times it was just a sudden braking, as though a foot stomped down hard on the brakes for a split second.

What the heck could have happened? Did I hit something that made the ABS kick in or something?? It was very alarming. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Im not an Acura mechanic like some of the guys on here, but I think your tranny might be going south.

Might wanna take that sucker to a dealer and see if they will "good will" replace it.

Agree

Immediatly to the dealer- your trans is about to stop working at a really bad time- usually dropping into 2nd on the freeway in front of traffic- very exciting
Yes they fail without warning- or act crazy then next day perfect
Dealer can pull codes and test drive- by law must write estimate, usually $150- when they know its warranty you are not charged that.

NOTE Recent court decision said odometers read more miles than actual PLUS the recent court ruling extending the trans warranty to 109 thousand miles
You would have a good arguement for the free replacement transmission under warranty
Otherwise they may kick in partial cost with you- mindful this is a $4000 transmission so worth effort on your part to know whats what
You may also need motor or trans mounts too- often fail- expensive parts- cheap labor when trans already out.

Good Luck

Go to www.acura.com and click ownership experience link
register your car by VIN number and it will tell you about the trans
also can store the radio security code there

Ed Voyles Acura of Chamblee, GA, got Acura to agree to replace the entire tranmission at no cost to me. My mileage is 125,000, which exceeds the recall warranty mileage, so I'm glad Voyles got Acura to step up for me.

Score!

Glad we could be of help in solving your problem
Its an extended warranty they covered you with- not recall
Could have spent $$$ looking for a brake problem

With the recent court decision that some Acura odometers record more miles than actual- there is new leeway in the over 109k ones

hey guys just bought a 2003 TL this week and i love it, gonna be workin on it this spring so pictures will be coming, i am alittle nervous on the tranny issue, i checked out the owner link like 01tl4tl said too, and correct me if im wrong but it says

Your 2002 Acura is included in the 2000-03 TRANS WARRANTY EXT Campaign.

then when i click the link it says the original 50,000 4yr warranty is now 7yrs 100,000

so im ok right ? the car has 61K on it now. If im covered this would be a great load off my cheast

Yes you are totally covered to 109 thousand miles/ 7 years from date in service new

Do yourself a favor and read and do the trans fluid change now

The acura site may also have shown an actual recall- maybe not for your VIN
that is the oil jet kit installation. Should be listed right where the other info was

Just a heads up at 125 thousand
You want to make sure if the timing belt + tensioner and water pump have been done recently.
Book calls for replacement at 105 but 125-150 had been done by members here
Its a pricey service so call a private shop or 2 and look around

If you have any tools and skills and space at all- you can do the trans flush and oil changes at home and the spark plugs are 45 minutes of ~fun~ that will save big $$$ over shop and you can do the 3x trans flush for the cost of a shop doing it once

Plugs NGK Iridium spark plugs $45 set, and fluid changes is the only things to do at 60 thou Plus the Seafoam 2 can treatment- will really make car run good

####IMPORTANT NOTE

If you take it to a quickie tune up shop and they put garbage air filter and oil filters on it, and worst- BOSCH spark plugs- you wasted money all around

Have a scroll thru the Gen2 thread titles for all you need to know about your new baby
