Stuttering & Bucking around 20-30 MPH??

I have a 2000 3.2TL and over the summer when gas prices were high, I started accelerating a little slower from a dead stop. When I get to around 20-30 MPH, I experience a quivering, stuttering type vibration. It lasts for a few seconds, then goes away. It's like there's a little "dead spot" in that speed or gear??? And, it only happens when I accelerate slowly. If I accelerate quickly it either doesn't happen, or if it does, I can't notice it.
I thought the vibration was just on the gas pedal, but my wife noticed it from the passenger seat. Unfortunately, the extended warranty due to transmission issues is up (was 7 years and 100k miles) but the local Acura dealer thinks it could be a gummed up EGR valve. They want $90 just to diagnose it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Could it be the EGR? Could it be a transmission issue?

Could be EGR (doubtful) It could be the trans, or many other things?

When was the last time plugs were changed, trans fluid was changed? If your any bit handy there is a DIY on cleaning the EGR ports, it takes about 1.5 hrs for the first timer to clean and isnt hard.

I agree with fsttyms, I doubt it's the egr valve. The egr ports, however, do make sense. I also think it might be a trans issue, specifically shudder. You could try a tube of shudder fixx [a lubegard product] or something similar just to eliminate the trans as the source. It's probably the quickest, cheapest, easiest thing to try.

Same for me ... when slowly accelerating, I'd get a little shudder around 20 - 25 mph and also noticed my tach jumping around a bit when maintaining a steady speed of 25-30. Took it in and the guy came back in 10 mins and said that my tranny was bad and they would have me in a loaner shortly. A week later, I got my car back with a new tranny. This was about 14 months ago, and so far, so good.

I too have the exact same symptoms:

- shudder around 20-30 MPH
- oscillations in tach when going at a fixed speed

I am noticing this since summer. During those days, when my car got hot..it would sometimes not engage the first gear from the stop. I haven't done anything yet. Hoping to carry it through the winter...

good luck!

Just to follow up on this issue, I went to my local AAMCO. Their diagnosis is that one of my coil packs is exhibiting intermittent faults. According to them, they found cylinder misfire codes, and replacing one of the broken coils fixed the above problem. I did not let them fix it for me...but I am debating if there is any truth in what they said.

They tried their best to find a tranny issue, but couldn't. So, I have a reason to believe that my coil packs are giving the above problem. Do you guys buy that? I am finding it very hard to believe that my tranny is completely fine in spite of above two symptoms. Thanks in advance.

I can see how it could be a problem with a non-working coil pack... no detonation... but I don't see how you could only feel that in the lower speeds/gears (20-30mph) and not feel it in the higher speeds/gears... if it was in fact a coil pack, then wouldn't you be able to feel it and notice it at all times? I am not a mechanic and only worked on cars for a short time (never engines)... I am going to go ahead and let Kris and Tom tackle this one...

Sorry, man....

Great reply, thanks! The tach oscillation DOES happen at higher speeds as well. I have noticed it even when going on cruise control at 80 mph. Now I am even more convinced that it's a coil pack.

The coil pack idea was a failure. I am not taking my car to AAMCO again, what a waste of time.

I am back to suspecting my tranny, will just wait for summer. I still see the two symptoms I mentioned above.

Ryan, did you do anything about this problem in your TL?

Really? I guess I'll just give up in the near term. Overall, it makes me less confident about driving my car, there's always a scare of violent shudder while driving...
