smoking steering column

smoking steering column

small amount of smoke coming from steering column on my 2002 tl type s. and vehcile randomly stalled. very cold in chicago. smell electrical/rubber burning. any ideas????
sometimes some smoke coming out of middle vents when heat is on?????? not alot of smoke coming out.

Sounds like a short on the ignition switch. It's an extremely easy DIY.

Remove the top and bottom cover of the steering column (3 bolts) and look underneath at the ignition switch (white circular piece of plastic). I think you'll have to remove it to see the wires on it but all conditions point to that.
