Exclamation side motor mount

hey yall

i have a shake at 30+ and its a steering wheel side/side shake with a seat shake...after searching and reading some thread most people point out axles or motor mounts

with my problem i checked my axles myself and at a shop and concluded its not them (also by doing the drop in neutral, still shook when coasting)

so now im point towards the mounts, the front was replaced roughly 2 years ago, side and rear never touched...

after checking it a few min ago, noticed that the front looks good, no oil drips, and when i pinch the hose when the car is running its stiff, when off soft, so i believe its working fine

but with the side mount, took a pry bar, placed it between the bracket of the side mount and the round part of it, seperated it and noticed its cracked on the front, also its real easy to move it around, barely any force needed........cant see near the back of it....no seperation tho...sits centered....could that cause my shake?

im gonna do the drive/gas test with my girl tommorrow to see how much the engine moves, but what is the allowance for that? thanks in advance

sounds like the side mount, i had mine replaced, as well as the front, but i never had any shaking while driving. just a clunk when going front R to D. or starting from a stop, engine moving back and forth.

Hi MurdaZ :

You can perform a very simple test to verify the condition of the mounts. Open the hood, get into the car and start it up. Look through the space between the hood and the top of the car and you should be able to see the top of the engine. With the engine running, put it in drive and hold down firmly the brake pedal. Gently pulse the gas pedal and you see the top of the engine move back and forth in time with the gas pedal.

The engine should move back and forth no more than an inch. If your mounts are shot, you will see movement of two inches or more. You can even see the upper mount from inside the car and it's respective amount of play.

Chances are that the front and side mounts are shot. Not a bad DIY job.

actually didnt change it, all i did was road force my wheels and 90% of the vibration is gone, bad a bad tire/nail in it that hums and gonna change that next week. (btw roadforce is awesome!!!, a must do vs regular balancing, always gonna roadforce my rims now)

if you got a vibration like that, when i was searching some people said side motor mount, do the test like smartypants said and rule it out, when i did the stop/drive test u can see it flex out.

with ur vibration, elaborate more

Thanks MurdaZ,

My vibration happens in 1st and 2nd gear between 20-40km/h. its really noticeable when I accellerate from a dead stop. If feels like my right wheel is coming loose making the car's front end shake left and right. The more I push the throtle, the more vibration I get. I had both axles replaced and these are brand new. The new axles fixed abit of the vibrations at speeds between 60-70km/h. I had one of the mounts replaced last year when the tranny failed, but I'm 100% sure the passenger side mount is still the original one.

I drive the car very aggressively and I'm lowered all around with less than 1 finger gap.
The dealership says my car could be too low and that may cause the vibrations, but I think thats not the issue as I was lowered before without the vibrations.

Also, If I accellerate on tight turns, the vibrations seems to be less or even gone. I'm assuming the weight transfer of the engine on one side stabalizes the vibrations.

Sorry for the long read, but I'm thinking its my passenger mount that needs replacement first.

What do you think?

Ok guys. So I've did the brake and throtle test and the engine moves less than an inche up or down. Im going to replace the passengerside mount first and see if there's less vibrations. Should I get the oem one or an aftermaket side mount? It's there a huge price difference? I know the oem one cost close to 70.

chewi :

The engine movement will be "north south" not up and down. The engine wants to rotate in the same direction as the crank spin and it's the engine mounts that counters this force. If the mounts are bad, the engine will "rotate" about 2-3 inches.

Thanks for tip.

By the way, since your in canada as well, where do you purchase your parts at a discount? My mech says the passenger side mount alone cost liek
$116 CAD. Thats nuts.

Some of the sites offered here on AZ will only ship within the 48 states only and not to Canada.

Hi chewi :

Yeah, we get totaly ripped off ! Wait till you see the price of the front mount. I have a private way of getting parts delivered to the US and then transported to T.O. completely legal.

You might want to consider hitting a stealership or parts store just over the border given the current exchange rate. Not that I'm suggesting you do anything illegal....

The side mount is something anyone can replace as it's so accessable and simple. The front is more complication but not that much more. I did both of mine in about three hours.
