Shifting from 1 to 2

Shifting from 1 to 2
Hello everyone. Just getting to know my new TL.
I noticed that my TL shifts from 1 to 2 automatically (RMPs = 3000 and Speed = 20 MPH) when in manual mode. I drove the RSX and it didn't experience this automatic shifting, neither did my 350Z. With the other two cars if I didn't shift to 2, it would lug.
I wasn't accelerating hard. I thought that this behavior was very odd. Has anyone else experience this problem or knows if this is a potential tranny problem?
Thanks

I have a 02 TL-type S. I thought it was weird that it would just shift like that. But, from what you're saying it's supposed to be that way. Go figure. Thanks for the information.

nothing strange going on. for some DUMB reason acura decided to make the tranny shift by itself in manual mode from 1-2. it would be nice if it would atleast hold in first till redline before it shifted

I find that if i floor it, mine will almost redline before it shifts automatically...Is that normal?

shift from first to second manually
I have an '03 TL-S, bulit in Mar. '02. I thought the 1st to 2nd auto upshift was unusual too. One day I was experimenting and guess what I discovered? Its easy to by pass. Don't use the sportshift. Instead move the shifter straight to the botttom (1-2) go left to 1st and take off. Mine doesn't upshift to second until I move the shifter to the right (2nd position). I don't know if it would ever upshift automatically, but I suspect it would when it hits the rev limiter for 1st.

You're gate-shifting. That'll work to hold onto 1st gear ... but ... bad for our already weakened tranny. (read the manual ... it doesn't recommend gate-shifting ... I think every car manufacturer doesn't recommend doing this ... period)

Gate shifting
I don't "gate shift". Even though I customarily read my manual cover-to-cover, I don't recall ever seeing the term there. But, as my Navigation screen says "use your own good sense".
You have missed my point. When I traded my '99 TL with a 4-speed automatic I initially thought I had lost the ability to hold the transmission in 1st or 2nd gear in the '03 TL-S 5-speed because both the normal auto shift and the sport shift use the 1-2 shift control. I was pleased to find I hadn't lost that capability with the '03 5-speed. It was my manual which semed to indicate the possibility of 1st or 2nd gear hold that caused me to experiment.
For one, I don't expect anything new to give me lesscapability than I had with the preceeding product . Secondly, I occasionally find it useful to hold the transmission in 2nd for slippery condition starts because our locality doesn't use road salt or deicing chemicals but also discourages the use of studs. We do, however, experience icy conditions at least ocassionally almost every year. My ''99 4-speed TL allowed both 1st and 2nd gear starts and I now know I can do the same with my '03 TL-S 5-speed.
