brake switch by the brake pedal or the brake fuse. Make sure your brake lights are turning on. If theyre not turning on, its the brake switch.

Check to see if your brake lights work. Odds are its the brake switch. Sometimes its the fuse but 99.9 % of the time its the switch

This happened to me about 2 months ago. Of course, I was out of town and it was my wife that had to discover it on my car, she was friggin pissed. You have to have your foot on the brake to move out of park and there is a solenoid the engages to block the shifter from moving over far enough to get out of park. If the sensor can't tell that your foot in on the brake, no solenoid. The sensor is a push-button that is engaged by the back of the pedal arm and is a pretty common problem.

In the interim, you can use a screwdriver to override it by flipping out the little plastic thing to the right of the shift gate on the trim. This will push the solenoid out of place and allow you to drive. It has to be long and slender, try not to scratch the trim. Be careful though, because you will have no brake lights, keep your eye on the rearview mirror and no sudden stops with someone behind you.

I bought a replacement from Autozone and changed it in about 20 minutes, no problem and back up and running.

This problem is a simple fix... I have learned this the hard way after paying $245 at Acura to fix for me. Do not go to Acura for this unless you enjoy Acura's sodomy.

If I take the little shift plate out and press the button down the car comes out of park, but once I start the car can I put it back in so that my brakes work? My repair guy isnt open on the weekend and of course it happened on the weekend, on a rainy day when I really need my brake lights.

first have a helper see if you have any brake lights working- or not

then remove the little cover and insert THE CAR KEY- push it straight down
it is made to do this-
foot on brake, Now shift to Nuetral- remove key- start car, put in any gear except P and you are ready to go
Every time you go to P, you have to override the safety warning lockout

of course DO NOT drive without working brake lights
you will be at fault in the accident!

if brake lights all work its the other sensor
if no brake lights- brake sensor

For the car that blew fuse= that didnt happen for no reason- something is causing a short in the system

the override doesnt affect your actual brakes- it overrides a sensor system made to let you know there is a problem somewhere

a bad bulb problem should trigger a dash warning Brake bulb (depends if your year has that)

Gotcha, sorry I meant to say brake lights, not brakes. It worked... when I put the little plate back in after I took it out of park, the brake lights work(well one of them does but ones been out for a couple of days)... so at least I can "rig" it that way this weekend until I can bring it in to be fixed. I am not particularly knowledegable about cars, but is it simple enough a fix for me to do myself if it really is just this sensor? I really would rather try and fix it myself if I can. Could this have occured from one of the brake lights going out a couple of days ago?

if you get brake lights its not the brake bright trigger/sensor
UNLESS
its become loose at the mount- ck it out!!

start with new bulbs, special ones of course!! at least the dead one and its match across on the other side or do all of them and its done
One bulb goes and the others follow!

simple diy to replace rear bulbs

thanks for sharing your experience, it does help- first time I heard of popping the fuse while changing the bulb
Its unusual to screw up the install, what step did you skip? what exposed screw ??

when i took out burnt bulb...i didnt put actual bulb socket back into the taillight.
so the liner in trunk pushed socket contacts into the bolt that holds taillight into rear of car
