Right way to check transmission fluid?

I know every car has different way of checking the fluid. The manual stated that you should check the fluid when the car is at normal temperature. What does this mean? After you drive for a while and check it while the engine is off? or check it while the engine is running? Or check it hours after you drove it?

warm up the car, or drive it for 2 min, then park, and shut off engine, now check the fluid level.

According to my Gen2 owner manual
Drive 20 minutes at freeway cruise speed
Stop
Shut off engine
Remove Yellow handled dipstick on driver side of car
Wipe clean
Insert Fully and remove
Level should be between the 2 dots
Should not have burnt smell
