Reputable transmission rebuilder in Silicon Valley?
Does anyone know of a reputable transmission rebuilder or shop in the San Jose, CA area?
May need to replace it on 2000 TL or is it best to take it to a dealer?

that depends- dealer wants 4000$ at least!,, but comes in a new style improved case- assuming your trans wasnt replaced before,,thats where we need to start- look at your trans with hood open - from above- look at main bolts thru trans and small bolts holding things to the trans--if those are painted blue- thats an acura warranty replaced trans
When that trans went in is important-post feb 2005 is when the switch to new case design occured
go look at that and get back to us
otherwise- aftermarket shops average 2000-2500
go to the Regions link at top of pages, ck the south bay area meeting threads, ask ziners local to you directly for referances

what symptoms is your trans showing?,,may be able to fix or band-aid if needed
miles on car? miles on trans if known replacement
Many are using a different fluid with improved shifting results

Large bolts from trany to engine seem to have dark blue or black and some small ones holding items have blue. The trany is taking about 8-10 seconds to go into reverse, when in drive it seems to go from 2nd to 4th or 5th. If placed in 5th it gets stuck in a low gear and then it slips before going into 4th or 5th, if "pushed" the 5th gearl light starts flashing.

awesome! you have a warranty replaced trans unit
now look down in front of the brake master cyl lines-- look at top of trans,,can you see a large bolt head with ATF stamped on it?
or is there a small black hose going to a funky thing into same place the filler bolt would be?
if kit present its a pre 05 replacement,,if atf bolt its post 05,,excellent for you! better rebuild-ability
proceed to Regions links at top of pages here- look up your area and start asking ziners for referral to shops
Yours trans is wayyyyyyy past toast, expect higher end of price range once they get it apart

the flashing D5 light when under hard throttle,,is a key indicator the trans is gone
If the rpm suddenly wont go over 3000 its because the ecu has gone into Limp Mode
the trans overspeed from slipping has caused the ecu to think the engine has been overrevved- and gone into self protection mode

Hello 01tl4tl,
Thank you very much for the answers! There is a large bolt head with ATF stamped on it and the small black hose bend into a U shape going into "air". I called a SJ area transmission shop which is Diamond, AAA, Better Biz Bureau certified to see how much it would cost and they would like to test (at no cost unlike the dealer) prior to quoting but they said they would rebuild the same trany and give 12 months warranty.

the bent hose is odd,,anyone have a guess as to its purpose?
should have removed the jet kit when the trans was replaced--he has blue bolt heads
the ATF filler bolt indicates post 2/05 made unit--the improved case design
any trans shop can only give a rough estimate until its taken apart and every gear, shaft and circlip is inspected -measured etc...then a total can be figured
Average total $2500 give or take 300,,with a 2-3 year warranty preferred~
you can always negotiate that into the deal
