Removing Bolt for Harmonic Balancer
Removing Bolt for Harmonic Balancer

2001 TL - I am in a process of replacing timing belt and water pump. I am having trouble removing the bolt holding the Harmonic Balancer, I do have a toll to hold balancer, while trying to loosen the bolt. My question: Is this bolt "right hand threded"(turn counter clockwise when looking at the bolt to remove?) or the other way around? As the engine crankshaft turn in a clockwise direction. I am thinking I should be turning the bolt in the same direction to remove it from the crankshaft. Please help....
Thank you.
Hey ther Prasook, welcome to the forums! Firstly we don't actually have a true harmonic balancer, though the pulley you're talking about does look very much like one. To answer your question, the bolt is just like any other bolt with standard threading; righty-tighty, lefty-loosey
It's a 19mm btw
The required breaking force to remove the bolt is outrageous. When we removed mine from my donor engine, we found it took almost 600 ft/lbs of force to break it loose. If you can get your hands on a quality 1/2" impact gun it can most likely remove it without needing the tool, though better safe than sorry.
Another option that has been done before is get a 19mm deep-angled wrench to go on the pulley, and position the other end of the wrench on the sub-frame support beam. Take out the fuel-pump fuse (can't remember which it is off the top of my head
) and start tapping the key to the start position to have the starter turn the engine over at very small incremenets.
Good luck!
EDIT: I say its a 19mm, but theres the posibility its a 21mm. Don't hold me to it, I'm tired and pulling those numbers off the top of my head. ONE is right

3G TL, but virtually identical. Check Kenndy's post on page 1 and mine on page 4.

Thank you all I got the bolt off. Has to preloaded the Braker+Cheater bar by about 1/4 of a turn.....Thanks again all. I am putting the engine back together now. Has to go find a shop with a press to compress the adjuster back in....BTW what is the torque for the engine mount bolts?

Thank you all, I am all done....anyone has recommendation for PS Belt adjustment? Started the engine, which ran great, as always, PS made a lot of noise and foaming, perhaps I "over-tighten" the belt. drove the car around the block, was hoping to bleed the PS pump. I discinnected the "S" between reservior and pump to replace timing belts. Hope I did not ruin the PS pump, not what I am looking forward to. Had to stop for the night and will loosen the belt tomorrow to see if the noise and foaming will go away. At this time should I be thinking about flushing PS fluid? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
