Rebuild

I have just passed 150k well cared for miles, and although the motor is still very strong and is not using oil I have begun to wonder how much life to expect? When rebuild time comes, what to expect in costs? Can any performance mods be done at that time? I had a Legend that I dropped a junk yard engine into, and it was not a good experience.

you should have alot of miles left on the engne so i wouldnt be worrying about it right now.

as for performance parts, if your going to rebuild the engine, you might as well turn it into a 3.5

150,000 well cared for miles on the engine should be barely half-life. What's the tranny like?

No tranny issues either. Is the 3.2 the same block as the 3.5? Same Crank?

How would a 3.5 conversion affect the computer, I wonder? Woldn't that throw it for a loop? I love my '00TL-P, but I think we'd be ready to part ways by 150k. We're at 112K, and the Mustnag, Charger HEMI, 300C, G35 and 3rd Gen TL are all catching my eye.

shouldnt affect teh computer at all the only thing your really doing is changing the stroke with the crank and compreddion with the rods and pistons. computer will compensate for whats needed

The TL is a special car, or we wouldn't be here. My 99 looks and runs great, even though I don't baby it. I've had many Detroit high performance boxes, and they just don't have the same feel or longevity.
So, is the 3.5 a longer stroke than a 3.2 with same bore? I thought longer stroke gives more torque and slower revving than a shorter stroke- which would make sense for an RL.

Gary, if cared for properly, the engine should not ever need a rebuild. As for the transmission, well that's another story.

it will rev the same as before if built correctly.

150k miles!? You just barely broke it in.

Honda engines are built well and last a long time. Just do the regular maintenance and you'll be fine.

you are correct it is a longer stroke and will give you more torque. those who have done it have seen around a 40-45hp increase (IIRC). someone else may end up correcting me on that though.

for the RL i believe alot of the slowness lies in the cams and gearing of the transmission. the RL has 'softer' cam profiles so it won't launch hard off the line (this may even be part of the a/f curve in the computer). and i believe the transmission is also geared more towards low-end smoothness as opposed to speed.
