Rear seal - how tough is it to change?
Rear seal - how tough is it to change?
Thanks for replies to my early post regarding my oil leak on my 99 TL. Its the rear main seal. Dealer wants 8 hours @ $100 per hour to replace the $15 seal. Can anyone tell me how tough this job is? I can turn a wrench, and have rebuilt a few older engines. Is this something a DIY home mechanic can do, or would I be better off finding a shop to take it to? Thanks in advance!
the hardest part will be removing the tranny. If your not afraid to try and have a friend to help it will be alot easier. Removing the tranny isnt that hard to do. the hardest part to get loose are the axel nuts. you could do it in a weekend in the garage your self pretty easy.
Update - happy ending, sort of
Took my 99 TL in to the dealer to confirm that I had a bad main seal. They took a look under the car, and looked under the hood. Said "Yup, looks like a bad main seal. That'll be $900 plus tax." Got a call a few hours later, and the service rep said "good news. That wasn't oil that was leaking, but transmission fluid. Your tranny blew up and we will fix it for free."
So, now I have a new (or new to me) transmission, and won't get stuck with a bill for the main seal.
All's well that ends well. Glad that transmission didn't hold on for another couple months. It went at 95,600 miles!
