I have a 1999 TL with 40,000 miles, I bought it a month ago.


No (major) problems until last night, I was driviing 35mph in the city when the speedo and the tach went to the top and bottom several times, the check engine light came on for 5-7 seconds then the dash went dark with no guages working at all. (

I drove for a few more blocks (looking for a safe place to pull over) when the radio died I turned off the heated seats. two or three more minutes went by and the headlights wend dead and I pulled into a parking lot, the engine shut off. I pushed the car to a proper stall.

I let the car sit still for 10 mines and then the car started up like their was no problem. I can go for a mile or so and the problems start over.


A local mechanic said it was definatly an alternator problem, but another mechanic told me that it was in no way an alternator and the car hs a bad computer chip. I don't want to drop the car off at a mechanic that is trying to take all my money.

Anybody had this problem? Anyone know a honest mechanic in Spokane WA?

 

Sounds like a battery or alt problem

 

My 02 TL is doing the exact same thing! I actually just got it back from the dealer earlier today after they diagnosed it as a bad alternator and was shocked when the symptoms were still there this evening when I went out to dinner.

I barely made it home and now the car won't start at all. This is all happening with a new alternator and a new battery. What could this mean? New starter needed? Bad computer chip?
