Post Engine Swap Problems, Need Help

Hey guys I need some help here. A few months ago I blew one of my head gaskets. Instead of replacing the gasket I picked up an 01 type-s engine with 71k on it for a good price from a friend who works for a dealership. The engine that came out was a non-S and the year of that engine was a 00. The only thing that I did different besides just drop the motor in was to keep the 00 intake manifold and put it on the 01 engine (wanted to keep my drive by wire). Long story short holidays came around and I got side tracked on the project. Now I have the car running but I have a cuple of problems that I need to sort out.

1. Shift lock- I have to use the shift lock release to put my car in and out of gear. And the car wont start because of this.... I tried to just put the car in N to start it but that still didnt work, so for now I just ran a wire from my starter and I have to tap the wire to my battery for the car to start (hella getto I know but I needed to get the car running)

2. My tcs light is on, the car only has R, 2nd, and 3rd gear. It shifts fine between the two gears but it wont go into 1st,4th,and 5th.

3. My tip does not work, when I move the shifter into tip mode my light on my tack does not indicate what gear im in and i can not manually shift between gears.

4. This isnt a big concern right now but I dont have my codes for my gps/nav, I really dont want to have to pay a dealership to get those codes either. Anyone know a easy way to get that code?

Any help with these problems would be great guys! And please please, no comments on why I would swap the motor instead of just replacing the gasket.

You'll also need the Type-S PCM to go with your new Type-S motor. Then start from there to further troubleshoot any remaining problems.

Sorry I meant to say 02 type s motor.

Anyway..... Well thanks for the advice. I was surprised that the it even runs with the non S ecu. What can I expect to pay for that ecu? they pretty easy to come by at a junk yard I would assume?

And I know thats a good base to get started at but do you think that would really cure my transmission problems? any other ideas guys?

ecu is about $700-$800. you might find one at a junk yard. also the cluster is diff. the 99-03 tl-p and tl-s have drive by cable. by changing the intake manifold u lost your butter fly valve. not sure maybe kris can chime in but im gonna guess that u need a new wiring harness too.

Wow thats quite a bit of change for such an old ecu!

The manifold that I took off was drive by wire.... I kepted my drive by cable so I'm not missing my flapper valve. I'm starting to think that I might have looked up the engine code differently and this isnt a type s motor? My engine code is J32A2, I thought this was a type s engine? *edit* n/m I looked it up again..... I was right to began with.

As for a wiring harness I don't believe that I need a new one. The old one just plugged right into the new motor and everything works besides my trans issues that I'm having.

Ok I see what your talking about now... But that should not create the issues that I'm having with my trans. Its gotta be something in the wiring or maybe something as simple as clearing out my codes? But I dont know, that way I'm here lol.

You do not have a 02 type-s motor if it came with Drive By Wire. You have a 3rd gen (04+ ) motor. That by itself may be leading to some of the issues. There may be a slue of sensors that are different due to that.

Is every thing plugged in would be the first thing i ask.

yes everything is plugged in. The only thing that isnt plugged in is my starter and I explained that setup in my op.

If its a 3rd gen motor I would think that the car wouldnt even run with the 2nd gen harness and ecu....?

My friends and I were just brain storming.... Do you think it might be an issue with the tranny not being mated up correctly?

If all you did was swap the motor there is NO reason that you shouldnt be getting all gears to work, or having to use the shift lock release unless you have things that arent plugged in. Now if you swapped the trans too then i could see some issues. Since you only did the motor im guessing things arent plugged in correctly.
You would know it if the trans wasnt mated up correctly. You wouldnt have gotten al the bolts in . It only goes on one way.
